Where the original Sonic Generations was a celebration of just Sonic's past, Sonic X Shadow Generations adds some love for his better half, Shadow the Hedgehog. The content centred around the Ultimate Lifeform is all brand new, leaving Sonic's gameplay feeling aged in comparison.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Review: A Good Remaster, A Fantastic Remake

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a good remaster of a fan-favourite game, but it's Shadow's story that steals the show, acting as more of a remake.

Of course, Sonic levels have such a lasting appeal because they're already great, no matter how purely Modern Sonic controls. That brings us to Sonic Heroes' Seaside Hill, a wonderful reminder of just how poorly Sonic can control. It's got a few new secrets in this release, so let's check them out.

How To Get An S Rank In Seaside Hill

An S Rank is one of the highest awards you can get in a Sonic game. Sure, the extra skills can be nice, but nothing feels better than dashing through a checkpoint and seeing the numbers in green to tell you you've went faster than you ever have before. Here's how best to get an S Rank in both of Seaside Hill's Acts.

Seaside Hill Act 1 S Rank

Act 1 has plenty of twists and turns, and a lot of your speed is determined by the cannons you find yourself in. It's not always obvious which are the best, so strap in and keep your fingers nimble for some sudden jumps.

As soon as you get underwater, jump onto the red platforms. They will fall after a moment, so start on the leftmost platform to give yourself a few extra seconds. Bounce off on one of the robotic fish to launch yourself to the higher route. Just one fish should give you enough height to close the gap.

After following along this route enough you will come to another leaping fish with spikes beneath them. Bounce on them like the jumping fish beforehand to reach a cannon that fires you to a higher route.

Pick up the invulnerability, and then jump to the adjacent platform instead of following the slope down. Bounce off the flying enemy when they're not electrified. This will after a moment lead to red platforms that will collapse almost immediately after standing on them. Make the jump at the last moment so you don't have to idle on the platform. This leads to another cannon.

Bounce over the electrified enemy here rather than dropping into the lower cannon, and proceed up into the next cannon. Bounce off the next flying enemy into the cannon beside them.

After dropping into the water, just jump past the yellow spring on the right. You jump higher in water, so you can easily clear this gap.

In the next section, you will be chased by a giant wheel. It doesn't defeat you if you get hit by it, so don't worry too much about it. Make sure to jump up to the platforms and Dash Rings above you when you pass into the second grass area while being chased.

Finish with a time under 2:50 seconds and a score of 50,000 to get an A Rank, with a Perfect Clear turning it into an S rank.

Seaside Hill Act 2 S Rank

Right after hitting the bounce pad, take the left rainbow ring. This leads to a significantly faster route than the right one.

When you get to the wall-jumping section ahead, use boost to reach the highest section of the wall to pass into the left, and then use boost to get through the spikes to reach a cannon that fires you upwards.

When you hit the downward slope of the upcoming bridge, jump to reach the Rainbow Rings, bringing you to a higher route. Be careful with sidestepping ahead so you don't fall down again.

After boosting up the next bridge, be careful to land on the red collapsible platforms. Move quickly to reach the grind rail inside the cave.

In the tri-section bridge, the flashing images determine if you get brought down to the turtle platforming sections, or if you get the kart to speed in. Try to aim for a kart route for the fastest route.

After completing the kart section and entering the next side-scrolling section, you can jump on the moving pillars as if they were a wall-jumping section. Do this quickly to reach a higher route.

In the next section, endless numbers of the massive wheels will be rolling across the course. The best way to avoid them is with side-stepping, though they shouldn't slow you down too much even if you do hit them.

Finish with a time under 3:10 seconds and a score of 50,000 to get an A Rank, and bump it up to an S Rank with a Perfect Clear.

Where To Find Every Red Star Ring In Seaside Hill

Left identical to how they were in the original game, Red Stars return, ten for each location, five for each Sonic. Here's where to find them all in Seaside Hill.

Seaside Hill Act 1 Red Stars

Here are the locations for each of Classic Sonic's Red Star Rings.

  • Red Star Ring 1: After jumping over the fish to reach a cannon, the Red Star is found to the left underwater.
  • Red Star Ring 2: After jumping over the second fish to reach a second cannon, the Red Star is picked up as you land.
  • Red Star Ring 3: Just below another cannon by a purple flying enemy. You can use Aqua Shield to reach it if you missed the higher route.
  • Red Star Ring 4: While being blown underwater, tactically release the poles to grab the Red Star.
  • Red Star Ring 5: Jump through the higher Dash Rings at the end while being chased by a giant wheel to grab the Red Star in a loop.

The reward you get for this is the Skill, Invincible Start.

Seaside Hill Act 2 Red Stars

Modern Sonic has five Red Star Rings to collect too. Here's all of them.

  • Red Star Ring 1: After taking the left Rainbow Ring at the beginning, is found on the upcoming grind rail.
  • Red Star Ring 2: In the first side-scrolling section, found by following upwards on a wall-jump.
  • Red Star Ring 3: Found on a grind rail after traversing some collapsible red platforms.
  • Red Star Ring 4: Found on the left near the end of the kart section.
  • Red Star Ring 5: In the final side-scrolling section, jump off the grind rail at the very end to grab the final Red Star.

The reward you get for this is the Skill, Direct Jump.

Where To Find Every Hidden Chao In Seaside Hill

Newly added in Sonic X Shadow Generations are six Chao hidden in each location, three for each Sonic to uncover. Here's all of them in Seaside Hill.

Seaside Hill Act 1 Hidden Chaos

Here's where to find the Chaos hiding in Seaside Hill for Classic Sonic.

  • Hidden Chao 1: After passing underwater after being launched by a cannon after the jumping fish, this Chao is hidden against the wall above the moving pillars
  • Hidden Chao 2: After being fired through a cannon after the second jumping fish, go to the left platform from the halfpipe to find the Chao.
  • Hidden Chao 3: In the lowest underwater section where the wind blows you, the Chao is waiting against the wall.

Seaside Hill Act 2 Hidden Chaos

Modern Sonic's three Chaos are strewn about Seaside Hill, and here's where to find them.

  • Hidden Chao 1: After being fired from a cannon towards another cannon, find the Chao in the corner on the upper area.
  • Hidden Chao 2: In the tri-section with the turtle and kart selection, choose the turtle and head to the left to find the Chao.
  • Hidden Chao 3: Before jumping into the cannon that sends you to the giant wheels, destroy the crates at the back of the room to find the final Chao.

Your trip through Seaside Hill is finished now, with everything seen and done that can be seen and done.
