Summary

  • Tekken 8's player base is still in free fall following controversial changes made in Season 2.
  • For the first time since launch, the game's 24-hour player count has dropped to less than 6,000 players.

If you've been following Tekken 8 recently, you'll know that it's an absolute dumpster fire at the moment. Despite calls from almost every fan to start making defense more important in fights, Bandai Namco has made things even more aggressive in Season 2, and longtime streamers are leaving the game over disagreements with the game's direction.

Tekken 8 just doesn't feel like Tekken anymore to a lot of fans, and they've been leaving in droves ever since. Now, less than a month after the beginning of Season 2 and the arrival of Anna Williams, Tekken 8 is hitting new lows on Steam. While its numbers on the platform were never that high to begin with, it has recently dropped below the 6,000 daily player threshold for the first time since launch.

Tekken 8 Has Dropped Below 6,000 Steam Players For The First Time Since Launch

Tekken fans just want to play Tekken

You can see the drop via the game's SteamDB page, first spotted by Reddit user Friendly_Bagel, as Tekken 8 has actually dropped below 6,000 players two days in a row. Today, the game peaked at 5,742 players, and dropped to an even lower peak of 5,716 players the day before. It's definitely a downward spiral, and it doesn't look like it's going to change its trajectory any time soon.

Tekken 8 was review-bombed shortly after the launch of Season 2. What is going on, and why do players think Tekken is dead?

Of course, these are just Steam's numbers, and you'd assume that most of the Tekken 8 playerbase is on consoles, but it gives us an idea of what's happening on other platforms too. Thankfully, director Katsuhiro Harada has addressed complaints about Season 2, saying that he doesn't think the backlash is "at all unjustified", and we'll likely see some more updates to fix key issues.

Unfortunately, we'll have to see how much of a playerbase Tekken 8 has left. We'll know there's a problem if there isn't a decent spike of players whenever the next character drops, but judging from half the comments in Friendly_Bagel's post about the game's falling player numbers, a lot of people are sick of Tekken not being Tekken anymore.
