Despite the dead body in the bedroom, there's some joviality going on in this case. The Little Mermaid is a lovely little pub - hopefully the murder doesn't lead to any bad press. As you'd expect, solving this murder is your goal this chapter.

Thinking Mode: The Scorecard
The first task to deal with in this case is to fill in the names of everyone on the scorecard that you found on the table between the card players. If you've collected all the names and noted which ones go together, it should be easy to piece together the clues.
- Some of the initials can only belong to certain names, as they're the only named that begin with those letters. This should deal with some of them quite easily.
- While there are multiple names that have surnames that begin with the letter 'B,' you can find references to those names in full, eliminating any guesswork.
- One person won both of the first games and is winning the third - this could help identify them.
- You may have come across a certain person's name in a previous case, if not met them personally.
Solution
The table below contains the answers to each person's identity, with their location in the table corresponding to their placement on the scorecard.
Annie Green
Willard Wright
Maurice Evans
Annie Green
John Breage
Oscar Boyton

John Breage

With the scorecard filled in, you now have all you need to work out the identities of all involved.
- As has been the case in a previous case, there is only one female character.
- Willard Wright was central to case two - spy the familiar face.
- Characters who have letters are likely those the letter is addressed to.
- M.E. seems to have lost a lot of money in that first game of cards - is there anyone here who seems to regret gambling?
- The man with the shear seems to be on the run. There should be a hint as to his identity.
- Pay attention to the characters' dialogue, it can provide context clues.
Solution
Again, the table below contains the identities of each character.
Willard Wright
Henry Parker
Robert Redruth
John Breage
Annie Green
Ash Blair
Maurice Evans
Oscar Boyton

There are a few red herrings in this one, so you'll have to play out the logical order of events carefully in your head.
- The pocketwatch has someone's name on it. If it doesn't belong to the victim, how could the victim have got ahold of it?
- The door to the victim's room is locked, so the murderer must have used an alternate means of entry.
- The door to the inn is locked and it seems the window in the deceased's room was broken from the inside. Does this narrow down the pool of suspects?
- We know who is staying in these rooms thanks to the barman's book. Is it important to know the occupant of theForget-me-not room?
- There were two games of cards before the one we see being played right now and we know the identity of the players.
Solution
Ash Blair crept into Willard Wright's room through the trapdoor while John Breage and Annie Green and Oscar Boyton were playing cards with loud music.
A fight ensued upstairs and Willard Wright got stabbed with a dagger.
