The world of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is full of cool and unique gear to collect. Some of that gear will come with extra effects, called enchantments. These enchantments will have either a minor or major effect on that piece of gear, and can dramatically change how your character functions.

Surely the Gray Fox is just a myth... right?
Posts By Zoë J. OsikYou can also enchant gear yourself. It's a bit of an involved process, but once you unlock the ability to do so, you can fully tailor your guy to your liking, giving you a lot more agency over how your character fights and interacts with certain parts of the world.
How To Find An Altar Of Enchanting
Getting to an Altar of Enchanting isn't necessarily a quick-and-easy task. There are two different ways to do it, and both are fairly involved in their own ways.
Join The Mages Guild Or Frostcrag Spire
There are Altars of Enchanting in The Arcane University, in the Chironasium. This is only accessible once you've joined the Mages Guild and completed enough Quests with them to be allowed into the University, achieving the rank of Apprentice.
There is also an Altar of Enchanting in Frostcrag Spire, which is a player home obtainable for free. It's located on the north side of the map, to the east of Bruma. But, you'll need to purchase a Megatallow Candle Box from Aurelinwae, which costs you more than 2,000 gold.
How To Get Soul Gems
To enchant gear, you'll need to have filled Soul Gems. These can be found in random locations throughout the world, but they can also be filled manually with the Soul Trap spell. The Soul Trap spell will trap the soul of a monster if the spell has been cast on them soon before you kill them.
You will also need to have a soul gem of the appropriate size in your inventory. It's a good idea to have a small stock of Soul Gems on you, so you can trap souls as you come across them.
How To Enchant Your Gear
Once you've got your Soul Gems and the gear that you'd like to enchant, you can head to the Altar of Enchanting and get started. There is quite a bit going on informationally when enchanting gear, and we'll go over every aspect here.
Select The Gear You Want To Enchant
First, you'll want to select the gear to enchant. This is the first tab on the left, and all enchantable gear you have in your inventory will show up here, from armor, to clothing, and weapons.
Select The Soul Gem
Next, you'll select the Soul Gem to use for the initial enchantment. The more impressive the soul gem, the more potent the enchantment will be. But, it's not necessarily always important to use a larger Soul Gem on every item; it depends on the enchantment.
This comes most into play when enchanting weapons. The more impressive the Soul Gem you use, the more damage your weapon will deal, or the more uses it'll have until it needs to be recharged.
Select Your Enchantment
Once you've selected your gear and you've chosen which Soul Gem you'd like to use, you can choose from a variety of enchantments. There will be slight variations depending on the item that you're enchanting, particularly between gear and weapons.
Gear Enchanting
Gear enchantments don't typically ever need recharged. These enchantments are static, passive effects if you're wearing the gear. These can range from things like damage mitigation for certain damage types, the ability to breathe underwater, to creating light that follows you around, and more.
Weapon Enchanting
Enchanting a weapon is quite an involved process. For one, you can add multiple different enchantments on the same weapon, though the enchantment itself will be of lesser quality for splitting the effect.
There are also multiple different UI elements when enchanting a weapon that aren't immediately obvious:
- On the bottom right is the gold cost of the enchantment. This can vary drastically, from almost nothing to thousands.
- On the bottom left is a lightning symbol, and this can be thought of as the fuel for the enchantment. The left number represents the fuel cost of the enchantment that you're trying to make, while the right number is the maximum fuel that the soul gem you used can provide.
- The candle in the center represents the number of uses the item you're enchanting will have before it needs to be refilled.
- Magnitude represents the strength of the effect, area is the radiusthat will be affected by your effect, and duration represents the length of the enchantment effect. All of these sliders are going to affect the values at the bottom.
How To Refill Your Enchantments
Weapon enchantments will need refilled, and you'll do this with Soul Gems. The more impressive the soul gem, the more fuel it will provide for the enchantment. Many times, a petty Soul Gem will refill the gauge by a portion of the bar, while a lesser or larger might refill the bar entirely.
