Summary

  • Despite being nearly a year apart, both Oblivion and Revenge of the Sith have both been re-released recently.
  • This is noteworthy considering the original release of Oblivion actually had an easter egg referencing Anakin.
  • That reference can still be found in the remaster and it's even seen a bit of a graphical touch-up.

As if we all needed another reminder that Oblivion and Revenge of the Sith are both nearly 20 years old now, Oblivion Remastered has kept and remade the original game's iconic reference to Anakin Skywalker.

Even though we're in the year 2025 and looking forward to the future of gaming, the past few weeks have certainly felt like we've gone back in time instead of forward. The main reason for this was this week's shadow drop of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which gave everyone a little time capsule to revisit a shinier version of the original game.

It's not just gaming that's taking a trip back to 2005 this week, though, as movies also did the same thing thanks to a re-release of Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith that's also been a massive success. That's a mighty big coincidence, as the two icons actually had a bit of a crossover back when Oblivion first debuted.

Oblivion's Nod To Revenge Of The Sith Is Still There In The Remaster

"I HATE YOU"

For those that don't know, the original release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion featured a cheeky easter egg that references Anakin Skywalker's near-death after fighting Obi-Wan on Mustafar. In the film, Anakin is cut in half and left to burn to a crisp in lava while reaching out to Obi-Wan, kickstarting his transformation into Darth Vader.

This was referenced in the original version of Oblivion with a random figure that can be found burning in lava when you visit the first Oblivion gate. The figure is reaching out in the exact same way that Anakin does in Revenge of the Sith and, considering the two released so closely to one another, it's clearly meant to be a nod to the film.

Revenge of the Sith first released in May of 2005, while Oblivion launched less than a year later in March of 2006. They're not quite the same age, but it's very close.

Fittingly with both Oblivion and Revenge of the Sith celebrating their anniversaries close to the same time, the easter egg can still be found in the remaster (thanks Dark Strider) and has even received a bit of a shine-up like the rest of the game. It's a stark reminder that we're all currently just reliving two decades ago, not that any of us seem to mind all that much.
