Summary

  • The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is the first time in a mainline game that we've been able to play as Zelda, but if we miss our good boy Link?
  • Thankfully, a glitch that involves a sign, some mist, and some menu shenanigans has been found that will let you play through Echoes of Wisdom as Link.
  • Unfortunately, the glitch is pretty hard to pull off, but a detailed video tutorial by ZeldaMaster is available for those of you determined to try.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has the titular princess running around, copying items, and defeating enemies with bedframes. Just like Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild before that, it was always going to be a game that players delighted in breaking, and a series of glitches have been discovered since release that are letting players achieve some pretty wild things.

One of the more interesting glitches currently in circulation even has the ability to change the game's main character, as fans have discovered how to play as Link instead of Zelda. This glitch was first found by a Japanese player, but was recently demonstrated for the first time for non-Japanese speaking fans by a YouTuber called ZeldaMaster.

Zelda Fans Are Playing Through Echoes Of Wisdom As Link

Unfortunately, the trick is very difficult to pull off, and requires a lot of precision at different moments. For starters, you'll need to make a fresh save and then save your game while you're playing as Link in Suthorn Ruins.

You'll then want to keep playing the game past the first dungeon, and then find yourself a Sign Echo, which should be pretty easy to grab as they're dotted about almost everywhere. Next, you'll want to make your way to the Eternal Forest, specifically a section that allows you to stand on the treetops and envelop yourself in the mist.

If you've been paying attention to the game's speedrunning community, you'll know that this is similar to the glitch that allows players to beat the game in less than an hour.

This is the part that is tricky. You'll then need to try and gauge the exact distance you can move into the fog before the game sends you back, at which point you'll need to plop down a sign and read it while opening the menu at the same time, but you need to be on the Load/Save game page. You should then be able to move around as Zelda while in the menu, and then you'll need to get yourself killed to get to the Game Over screen.

Once you've done that, you should be able to navigate both the Retry and Load game menus at the same time. You then have to load up your Suthorn Ruins save as Link while pressing the A and Up buttons, and you should respawn as the mute warrior himself. If you do it wrong, you'll be cursed to walk around in the pitch-black darkness as Zelda.

Like I said, there are a lot of steps to this, and even knowing what to do doesn't guarantee you'll be able to do it. ZeldaMaster's video is much more in-depth if you're determined to give it a go, though why you'd want to play as Link when we've spent so long waiting for a Zelda-focused game is beyond me. Don't take away her time to shine.
