Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis Is The Latest Game To Say It Used AI Assets, But Promises They've Been Removed Or "Refined"
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis got a new trailer at PlayStation's State of Play last night. As well as giving us another look at the game, we got a confirmed release date: February 12, 2027.
However, a quieter update about the game's development was shared on the Steam page, and spotted this morning. As noted by Eurogamer, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis contains a disclaimer over the use of generative AI, explaining exactly how it was utilised during the game's development.
Generative AI Was Used In Tomb Raider: Legacy Of Atlantis, But The Devs Say They've Been Removed Or "Refined By Humans"
"AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content," the statement reads. "Any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team."
This appears to be Crystal Dynamics' way of getting ahead of any criticism, but really, the wording is so vague that AI-generated assets could still be used in-game. The statement says that they were either "replaced or refined by humans" - and it's that "refined by humans" part which is so concerning. If you AI generate some assets and then get a dev to mess around with them to make improvements, many would still see that as an AI-generated asset. The foundations are AI slop.

So far, games that have left AI assets in their games have come under fire, with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 even losing out on an award because of it. Similarly, Larian faced backlash after the studio admitted experimenting with AI art in the conceptual stages of its new games, something that it has since walked back on.

Arc Raiders did just that with AI voice acting, although the team has since reversed its stance on this. It seems inevitable that it will continue to crop up in new releases, and it just depends on how much tolerance the gaming community has for it.
