After A Decade Of Requests, World Of Warcraft Player Housing Is In Development
Summary
- World of Warcraft is finally getting player housing, following over a decade of requests from fans.
- Blizzard announced the feature in today's Warcraft Direct, and confirmed player housing will be included in the upcoming Midnight expansion.
- Details are still scarce on how player housing will work, but executive producer Holly Longdale has claimed that "a lot of great progress" has already been made.
Warcraft turned 30 this year, which is an absolutely gigantic milestone for a single series. Warcraft: Orcs and Humans was first released three decades ago, and the ever-present, massively popular MMO World of Warcraft turns 20 this year too. To celebrate these birthdays, developer Blizzard put on a 30th anniversary Warcraft Direct, which was packed with new updates and announcements.
There were plenty of standouts during the show, but the one that generated the most buzz came right at the end. In a small cutscene, an adventurer is shown entering a house and walking past various trophies displayed on the walls and plinths. They then take a seat in a chair next to a roaring fire, and take a swig from their tankard which reads "Home Sweet Home". Yes, it's finally happening.
World Of Warcraft Is Finally Getting Player Housing
World of Warcraft players have been asking for player housing for years, looking rather enviously at other MMOs like Final Fantasy 14, since players don't really have a place to call their own. Thankfully, it looks like this is changing fairly soon, as it was confirmed by the Warcraft Direct (and a later post from the World of Warcraft Twitter account) that player housing is currently in development, and will be released as part of the upcoming Midnight expansion.

Posts 2 By Johnny Flores Jr.Unfortunately, Blizzard was very light on the details, but WoW executive producer Holly Longdale did speak a little bit about the feature in an interview with the Daily Star. In the interview, Longdale explains that player housing can't be shown off just yet, as it's still early days, but that "a lot of great progress" has already been made, and promises that Blizzard is making housing "the World of Warcraft way".
We can take a stab at how it will work by looking at other MMOs, and we can make a relatively safe assumption that trophy mounts will be a thing, since they were so prevalent in the short teaser that was revealed, but we'll have to wait for more details. We're also yet to get a proper release date for the Midnight expansion, so Blizzard will clearly have higher priorities at the moment. We've waited over a decade at this point, so an extra year should be a cinch.
