As PlayStation goes all-in on digital-only releases and kills physical games in the process, a cancelled Xbox advert that aimed to celebrate the advantages of both formats has been uncovered.

It's no secret that the last few years have been really rough for the gaming industry, with tons of promising games cancelled, studios shut down, and horrible business practises being pushed until they become the norm. As bad as it's been, though, I don't think it's felt worse than in the past few months.

Not only is Xbox reported to have some major layoffs and potential studio shutdowns in the works, but PlayStation has effectively signed the death warrant for physical releases by announcing the end of disc production in 2028. This will likely cause other companies to follow suit, but an advert that ended up being cancelled suggests it's already been on the radar for other companies.

Xbox Advert From 2025 That Celebrated The Difference Between Physical And Digital Was Cancelled

It Doesn't Give Me Much Hope That Xbox Decided Against What It Wanted To Say

Over on Twitter, reliable insider billbil_kun shared an interesting scoop that they reported on Dealabs. According to their findings, Xbox planned an advert in early 2025 that was meant to highlight and arguably celebrate the difference between physical and digital releases, outlining the strengths of each approach.

The 42-second advert asked viewers which format was best for them, before explaining their advantages. For example, Xbox touted that physical releases let you keep your copy of the game, enjoy limited editions, and have the ability to lend copies to friends. On the other hand, digital releases let you pre-install games, easily swap between titles, and have access to exclusive digital editions.

Sure, none of this is news to anyone who actually plays games, but it was a good notice for more casual gamers that clearly said there are positives to both approaches, even encouraging players to choose between them. Dealabs discovered the advert last year and expected it to air a few days later, but it disappeared without a trace, suggesting that it was just outright cancelled instead.

While adverts can be cancelled for all kinds of reasons, it's a little bit dire that Xbox decided against celebrating the differences between physical and digital releases, and possibly suggests it knew a pivot was coming. Xbox is no stranger to digital-only releases, after all, so it wouldn't really come as a surprise if the cancellation was a sign of the times.
