As you progress in the main story of Ys X: Nordics and embark on the open sea, you'll quickly realize that a large chunk of your game will be spent taking your ship from one place to another. As you do that, you'll consistently have to face difficult opponents of the Undying Fleet.

Modern JRPGs would not have gotten to where they are now if it weren't for these ten games laying the foundation!
Posts By Yezua HoSome of these battles will be necessary to beat for the story, while others can be optional like the fortress recaptures or red and purple zones in the waters. However, you'll have to understand how ship combat works if you want to beat them.
How To Beat Other Ships
As mentioned above, there are many ways to take part in naval combat while playing Ys X: Nordics. Some of them can start during the main story while you can intentionally trigger others using island recaptures or going into red and purple zones in your adventures. Red zones only have smaller ships while the purple one has a boss ship.
Sometimes, when you get close to a merchant ship, it can also start attacking you and starting a difficult battle.
These fake merchant ships have significantly higher durability and hp, making them quite tough to go against.
Once you've started ship combat, the first thing you should do is get rid of all the ships without the durability bar. You can use your normal cannons, EX Armaments, or special ammunition to do so. This is an important step since you can easily get overwhelmed if you let these ships spread out and attack you from different angles.
After defeating a few ships, you can start attacking the big ship with durability, if there's any. The best way to remove the durability is by using special ammo that has high break damage like the Spear Shot. You can also get the Smasher Shot as your base ammo after progressing the story, which is decent at breaking durability as well.
If you break the enemy's durability in the purple zone battle, you can ram them with mana dash and board the ship to get extra rewards.
This is how you generally want to handle ship battles in the game, with a few differences when it comes to special battles like the recapture. Once you unlock the mana shield, you can also use it to block any damage from the enemies. Moreover, if your ship is in low health, you can use repair kits through your inventory to fix it up.
How To Upgrade The Sandras
Sandras is the name of the ship you use in Ys X: Nordics, and as you might already know, it isn't in the best shape when you get it. If you want to keep up with the increase in the enemy's difficulty for ship battles, you'll constantly have to upgrade the Sandras, giving it various buffs and new items.
You can do this by either visiting one of the shipwrights in any of the major towns or saving Cruz during the main story. After you save him, you can directly upgrade your ship through the planning cabin on the lower deck. Each upgrade costs some gold apart from various other items that you can naturally get while exploring.
It's important to break barrels while exploring islands and run through all salvage boxes on the sea to stack up on these items.
Once you've unlocked a new kind of ammunition for your ship, you can equip it by either going to the loadout section in the planning table or checking it out when you're on the helm by bringing up the special ammo menu and then pressing the button shown at the bottom.
