Valheim, the new Early Access Viking survival game taking over Steam, has expectedly been experiencing a few bugs since launch. Aside from servers not showing up, one of the biggest issues players have been facing is a version incompatibility bug.

How to Fix Valheim Incompatible Version
If you have updated Valheim, but your server gives you problems, it means that your game client has been updated but your game server hasn’t.
To fix that, follow these steps:
- Save the entire “/Valheim/savedata” folder in a different path
- Update your server
- Copy the “/savedata” folder back to the Valheim folder
Note that you absolutely need to back-up your “savedata” or you will lose your game progress.
If you don’t know how to update your server, then follow these steps:
- Download and install SteamCMD
- Create a folder for your dedicated server
- Create “update.bat” file inside this folder
- Open “update.bat” file in the Notepad
- Copy and paste the following text into the file:
C:SteamCMDsteamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:Valheim +app_update 896660 validate +exit
You can change the folder paths if they are different than what’s outlined above. Once that’s done, save the “update.bat” file and execute it.
If you did everything right, your server version and your game client should be compatible, and you can run the game.
