GTA 6 pre-orders went live this week, and within 48 hours the community had already split into two camps: people hyped about the November 19, 2026 release date feeling real, and people furious about what Rockstar is locking behind the $100 Ultimate Edition.

Rockstar is gating actual open-world businesses and two side missions from players who pay the already-above-average $79.99 standard price. On top of that, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed through a source with direct knowledge that there are no plans to print GTA 6 on disc, not at launch and not in the months after. If you want to play GTA 6, you will be downloading it, full stop.
Here is a full breakdown of every edition, everything confirmed locked, what the no-disc decision actually means, and where gaming as a whole stands right now heading into what should be its biggest year ever.
What Each GTA 6 Edition Actually Costs
The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 in the US and 80 euros in Europe. That is $10 more than most AAA releases, though European pricing is broadly in line with recent launches.
The Ultimate Edition is $99.99 (or 100 euros). Anyone who pre-orders either edition before November 20, 2026, gets the Vintage Vice City Pack, a bonus that includes a classic sedan, Vice City-style outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, tropical weapon skins for several guns, and a special open-world garage with a weapon locker and a location to fence stolen goods. According to the Xbox Store listing, the Vintage Vice City Pack will also be available for separate purchase after launch.
Every Piece of Open-World Content Locked Behind the Ultimate Edition
This is where the controversy lands. The following content is confirmed by Rockstar as exclusive to the Ultimate Edition and unavailable to Standard Edition owners:
Vehicles included only in Ultimate Edition:
’95 Grotti Cheetah (GTA’s equivalent of a Ferrari Testarossa)
Shitzu Squalo boat
’67 Vapid Dominator buggy
Jason’s Dinka Enduro motorcycle
Crest kayak for Jason
Weapons:
Hawk and Little Morgan revolvers for both Jason and Lucia, with palm tree-etched grips, engraved detailing, and a high-performance scope
Personalized variants of Jason’s Gerardi ES9 and Lucia’s K17 pistols
Locked in-game businesses (only open with Ultimate Edition):
Rideout Customs (car tuner shop, ride customization and off-road modifications)
One-Eyed Willies (custom paintwork specialist)
Sara’s Unisex Salon (exclusive haircuts, makeup, and nail options for Lucia)
Stock 305 (exclusive streetwear clothing store)
Electric Fang Tattoo Shop (over 50 signature tattoos)
Locked side missions:
A gang hideout raid
A classic car collection mission where you track down abandoned project cars and restore them for an eccentric local fixer named Wyman
Standard Edition players will reportedly walk past these businesses in the open world and either find them inaccessible or be greeted with a message to upgrade. The standard game still includes the full main story and presumably other tattoo parlors, clothing stores, and car shops scattered across Vice City. But the fact that portions of the open world are blocked by a paywall is what has players angry.
The No-Disc Situation Is Final
Physical copies of GTA 6 will ship on November 12, one week before the November 19 launch date, but they contain only a download code inside the box. No disc is included at launch.
Earlier this week a Rockstar Support email went viral, with fans believing the line “you will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months” hinted at a disc version arriving after launch. IGN confirmed that interpretation is wrong. The support email was referring to the existing physical box (code only), not a future disc print run.
The Hollywood Reporter, citing a source with direct knowledge of Rockstar’s launch strategy, stated clearly: “At this point in time, there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed, not at launch, and not months after.” A Collector’s Edition is reportedly planned for later, featuring a steelbook and exclusive physical items, but it will also contain no game disc.
The likely reason is leak prevention. Physical copies of major games have been sold early or stolen from warehouses before, spreading content online weeks before release. Rockstar clearly decided a digital-only approach removes that risk entirely.
GTA 6 Online Is Not Included at Launch
The official PlayStation store page for GTA 6 currently lists the game as a single-player experience. A FAQ section on the page, when asked whether GTA 6 has multiplayer modes, answers that it is a single-player experience. For comparison, GTA V’s store page lists support for up to 30 online players.
This strongly suggests GTA Online’s successor will launch separately at a later date, possibly as a standalone product with a discount for GTA 6 owners. It means the $79.99 price covers only the story campaign.
Pre-order momentum is skewed heavily toward PlayStation. Retailers are reporting PS5 pre-orders outselling Xbox 6 to 1 at this stage.
GTA 6 Is in a Rough Place At The Moment
GTA 6 is launching into one of the most turbulent stretches for the gaming industry in years.
Bungie is being gutted. Sony confirmed layoffs this week hitting most of the Destiny 2 team and some Marathon team members, with the total reportedly reaching around 400 people including contractors. A scheduled Destiny 2 patch had to be delayed because there are not enough staff remaining to test or ship the update. Destiny 3 will not happen, and that IP is effectively finished. Bungie’s future now depends entirely on whether Marathon can recover, with the team reportedly exploring a PvE-only mode to bring in new players. Sony spent $3.6 billion acquiring Bungie.
Xbox just raised console prices again. Effective August 1, 2026, the Xbox Series S 512GB goes from $399 to $499, the 1TB Series S goes from $449 to $599, the Xbox Series X Digital goes from $599 to $749, and the disc-drive Series X goes from $649 to $799. The 2TB model is being discontinued. Microsoft cited memory module costs rising more than 2.5 times, with another doubling expected by fall 2027.
Console sales have already collapsed. PS5 hardware sales in the US dropped 58% in May compared to the year prior, reportedly hitting the lowest monthly figure since May 2000, driven directly by price increases. In the UK, PlayStation 5 sales dropped roughly 50% in May as well. Sony has secured enough component stock to hold PS5 pricing through March 2027, but it is a fragile situation.
The Steam Machine launched at over $1,000. Valve originally targeted around $750 for its new living room PC, but the 512GB model launched at $1,049 without a controller, with Valve citing the same component crisis. Performance is reportedly similar to or occasionally below the PS5, though it opens access to Steam and Windows storefronts.
Xbox layoffs are expected this week. Microsoft’s financial year ends June 30, and multiple studio closures along with significant job cuts are expected before the week closes.
AC Black Flag Resynced Reviews Land July 8
On a lighter note, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches July 9, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, developed by Ubisoft Singapore. The review embargo lifts July 8, one day before release.
IGN’s latest preview showed Havana looking noticeably more alive, with more NPCs on the streets, improved animations, new world events, returning assassination contracts, and a proper day-night cycle that changes the atmosphere of the city significantly. Leaked Helix armor sets (premium currency cosmetics) have divided fans, though similar items appeared in Mirage and Odyssey without stopping sales.
Lords of the Fallen 2 Slips to Q1 2027
CI Games CEO Marek Tyminski confirmed that Lords of the Fallen 2 is no longer a fall 2026 release. The game is now targeting Q1 2027, with the team citing the need for additional polish. It trades a packed October window for an equally packed early 2027 calendar, which now includes Fable, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Persona 4 Revival, and reportedly Law Fay in February or March per Jason Schreier.
