Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 players are no stranger to moral dilemmas in the game. In fact, many quests involve heavy choices that could mean life and death for certain characters. In KCD2 Portrait in Red, we are once again faced with the burden to decide whether to kill or spare a life. Here’s a walkthrough to this quest, which is already the fourth in the Brushes With Death DLC expansion.
How to Start the Quest
After completing the previous DLC quest, “Chiaroscuro,” wait until the next morning and speak with Master Voyta in Trosky Castle. He will then reveal his troubled past to you. Next, he’ll ask for your help in dealing with Burkhard, who is a notorious killer.
Through conversation, you can learn that Voyta has been hearing voices compelling him to eliminate Burkhard. If you successfully pass the speech checks, you’ll discover more about their history.
Finding Burkhard’s Camp
To continue the KCD2 Portrait in Red quest, head northeast from Trosky Castle. Go into the forest and look for a bandits’ camp, which can easily be spotted. You’ll be able to find Burkhard with them. It’s precisely at the “A” marker on your map in the northern Apollonia region.
Before approaching the camp, consider saving your game as making one permanent choice can lose you the chance for a missable trophy. Ensure that you have proper equipment as well and with full health. Then, decide how you would want to deal with Burkhard.
How to Deal with Burkhard
Among several options for handling Burkhard in the KCD2 Portrait in Red quest, there’s only one that would give you the missable trophy. Here are all your choices:
Option 1: Direct Combat
- Approach the camp during daylight
- Speak with Burkhard and pass skill checks for a one-on-one duel
- Defeat him in combat (his gang will flee automatically)
- Failing the skill checks will result in fighting the entire gang
Option 2: Stealth Assassination
- Wait until nightfall (around 2:00 AM)
- Wear light, dark clothing to remain undetected
- Sneak into the camp when most bandits are sleeping
- Perform a stealth kill on Burkhard with a dagger
Option 3: Non-Lethal Approach (Trophy/Achievement)
For the “Vengeance Solves Nothing” achievement:
- Wait until nightfall
- Sneak into the camp undetected
- Locate and lockpick the chest in the camp (medium difficulty)
- Steal the “Killer’s Helmet” from the chest
- Leave without killing Burkhard
Note that even when you give Burkhard a non-lethal blow in Option 1 or 2, it will still count into voiding the trophy.
Returning to Voyta
Return to Voyta at Trosky Castle to report your results. Your conversation will vary based on your chosen approach:
If You Killed Burkhard:
- Tell Voyta about eliminating Burkhard
- Optionally lie or tell the truth about other bandits
If You Spared Burkhard:
- Show Voyta the Killer’s Helmet
- Pass a speech check to lie about killing Burkhard
- This earns you the “Vengeance Solves Nothing” achievement
- If you fail the speech check, you’ll need to increase your Speech skill and try again
You can always go back to your previous save to redo the whole thing and get it right. After completing the KCD2 Portrait in Red quest, you’ll receive:
- Murderer’s painted helmet (if you stole it and gave it to Voyta)
- New shield painting symbols
You’ll also be able to ask Voyta some questions about the truth and his connections to the people he asked your help for. However, even after exhausting all dialogue options, you won’t actually get to hear a clear answer from him.
He’ll instead mention that it’s hard to open up when he isn’t home. Fortunately, he follows up with his plans to go home soon to Kuttenberg, and invites you to meet him there.
Conclusion
When you complete the KCD2 Portrait in Red quest, you’ll be done with helping Master Voyta in his work in Trosky. Instead, the second part of this questline will take you to his home, the Kuttenberg region. Who knows how much more peculiarity awaits you there? More importantly, will you finally get to know the truth about Voyta’s identity and his enigmatic story?
