Industry veteran David Perry - known for his work on the classic Earthworm Jim - has announced his next project, SXPD: The Rookie for iPad.

One-half comic book and one-half futuristic racing game, SXPD: The Rookie drops player into the pages and action of the SXPD - a female-only police department struggling to uphold the law in the futuristic city of New Royale.

Similar to Square Enix's hybrid graphic novel / mini-game Imaginary Range, SXPD: The Rookie differentiates itself by taking a gritty, noir approach to storytelling and novelization similar to what you'd expect to see in the likes of Sin City.

Or maybe an A-ha video form the 1980s.

Dated musical references aside, Perry noted that SXPD: The Rookie does in fact have its roots firmly planted in the 80's - but its inspiration comes from the ZX Spectrum classic 3D Deathchase, one of Perry's favourite games of all time.

SXPD: The Rookie will cost $1.99 / £1.49 when it's released as part of OneBigGame's non-profit initiative on the App Store this May.

To tide you over until then, here's a quick trailer showing you what you can expect from the game.
