As the first day of WESG 2016 Global Finals concluded, we present a brief recap of the opening day.
World Electronic Sports Games Finals kicked off with the group stage where 23 teams commenced their battle for one of the three playoff spots their group offers. No major surprises happened in the opening day, as the favourites made their way to the top of their groups.
Group A
The most stacked and anticipated group of WESG Finals saw four relatively powerful teams gather four points each. subtLe and Team One, two underdogs of the groups weren't able to gain a single point as EnVyUs, .Russia, Epsilon and Virtus.pro tied for the first place with four points each.
First day results and standings:
Group B
iGame.com gained huge advantage after the first day. The Finnish team managed to win both two matches they've played. With no other team in the group above three points, iGame.com stands as the favourites to top the group in day two.
First day results and standings:
Group C
As a result of GODSENT's withdrawal, Group C featured five teams. Kinguin and Space Soldiers started the tournament as the clear favourites for the first place in the group and both teams won their matches against the other teams in the group. As the crucial match between those two teams ended up being a draw, both the Poles and the Turks have to maintain their high performance in the second day in order to top the group.
First day results and standings:
Group D
The only result that might be considered as a surprise came from Group D. The Ukrainian mix, .Ukraine, won just a single map in three matches. Thanks to the Ukrainians' poor showing, Dark Passage, TyLoo and Selfless hold the playoff spots comfortably. These three teams will fight for the first place and the quarter-finals spot that comes with it in the second day.
