What’s new in the extraction shooter mode DMZ in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4?
According to its description on Xbox Wire, DMZ has been significantly evolved from its beta version, which was introduced in November 2022 and brought extraction-style gameplay into the first-person shooter arena.
“Set across a large-scale conflict zone shaped by the events of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, it’s built for both structured missions and emergent gameplay, where you can loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract with whatever you can carry. You can deploy solo or with a squad into a volatile, living combat zone as off-the-books assets tasked with recovering advanced military technology left in the wake of war."
DMZ will also feature harsh conditions in the exclusion zone, described as constantly shifting, with dynamic weather, evolving military objectives, and hostile forces. The studio’s creative director Joe Cecot also highlighted what he considers the biggest new features in this reworked DMZ mode, including the 3D Printer and the Gunsmith.
The 3D Printer will be an interactive device located at your FOB, allowing players to convert materials into usable equipment, giving greater meaning to loot collected during matches.
The Gunsmith system will also be “very different” from the beta version. Cecot explained:
“In the beta, we had a weapon cooldown slot that would return and allow you to gear that weapon up. In Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ, Gunsmith is driven by the cash you find in-game. Your gear is printed through the 3D printer. Your gun is cash-driven. So, when you’re in-match, doing dynamic ops or story missions, you’re getting a trickle of cash that is wired back to your FOB. That cash is then used to build your weapons, and weapons still level up just like they do in core Multiplayer. They’re linked to each other.”
This deep dive into the revamped DMZ arrives ahead of its expected launch later this year. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on 23 October 2026, with pre-orders now open on all available platforms.
