Phoenix and Cyclops merge for Marvel Tōkon’s first DLC fighter. 

PlayStation Studios and Arc System Works popped up at San Diego Comic-Con this week to reveal more information for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The upcoming fighting game's first year one DLC fighter has been announced: Phoenix Cyclops, alongside the release of its opening movie.

What is Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ Year 1 DLC? 

Cyclops is joining the Marvel Tōkon roster–well, sort of. The iconic X-Men leader will be Marvel Tōkon’s very first DLC fighter, but in a slightly different form than usual. This version of Cyclops is inspired by the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, wherein the Phoenix Force was split into five, and possessed multiple members of the X-Men. 

This will likely diversify Cyclops usual set of abilities in Marvel Tōkon, giving him access to Phoenix Force-related fire abilities, on top of his usual Optic Blasts. Whether or not he will eventually be joined by the longtime vessel of the Phoenix Force and his romantic partner–Jean Grey–remains to be seen. 

Interestingly, Phoenix Cyclops will be voiced by Ray Chase, who also voices Cyclops in X-Men ‘97 and Marvel Rivals. 

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls opening movie

Arc System Works also unveiled Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ opening movie, which harkens back to 2000s-era anime and classic fighting game openings. The opening movie is also animated with 2.5D visuals, featuring an opening song with two iconic Japanese rock vocalists: Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA and mayu of NEMOPHILA. 

As for the opening animation, it was directed by Daisuke Suzuki of Sanzigen. The opening movie runs through all of the game’s playable characters at launch–from Magik to Green Goblin, allowing players an early preview of their future mains. 

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls x Marvel’s Wolverine collab

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is also partnering up with Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine, with the addition of a Battle Reborn Suit for Wolverine. The suit will be available starting from 1 September, 2026. It will also be free to download, at no additional cost for all players. This won’t be the game’s only collaboration with Insomniac Games, as the Ultimate Edition also adds Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Advanced Suit 2.0. 

Arc System Works has also confirmed that more character skins are in development for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls characters, which is quite the departure from the developer’s previous fighting games.
