New and returning planes are coming in their own MTG sets throughout 2027.

At MagicCon: Amsterdam, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) announced three new Multiverse (or in-universe) sets that will be released throughout 2027, featuring the beloved Kamigawa plane, a brand new underwater-themed Nauctics realm, and a somewhat new Zhalfir plane.

Three Universes Beyond sets will also be released in 2027, but while details about the sets are scarce at the moment, there is speculation that a Legend of Zelda set is in the making after Hasbro just announced a licensing partnership with Nintendo to create products based on its Legend of Zelda franchise.

The releases throughout 2027 will alternate between the two different types of sets listed above, and this comes after a very different year for Magic: The Gathering in 2026, where for the first time, there are more Universes Beyond sets than in-universe sets. 

All-new MTG sets coming in 2027

Wizards of the Coast provided glimpses of what we can expect in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering 2027 sets with announcement trailers for the respective additions. We summarised the details below:

Nauctis: Sunken Realm

Release date: 5 February, 2027

Nauctis is a completely new realm within MTG that brings its first-ever fully underwater plane, bringing to life the long-time requests of fans. It is described as a place where Merfolk civilisation is at its height, with many different fantasy species coexisting, and where an apocalyptic danger lurks at the bottom of the ocean.

Unlike most other planes, in Nauctis, humans are the outsiders. What makes it even more unique is that it will not feature flying as a mechanic, as, of course, everything will be submerged underwater. Instead, a new evasive mechanic will be introduced to replace flying.

Kamigawa: Titanbreach

Release date: 4 June, 2027

A fan favourite plane, Kamigawa, is returning with chaos as its skies open up to see all sorts of giant creatures from the plane Ikoria crashing into the Japanese cyberpunk world.

Both planes were last seen in the set March of the Machine released in 2023, after the New Phyrexians tried to take over the whole multiverse. 

The citizens of Kamigawa will have to defend themselves and tackle the gigantic monsters that dwarf everything around them in the Towashi metropolis–likely with mega-sized mechs as well.

Here, we will see an epic battle of mechs versus monsters, with all sorts of weird creatures becoming entangled in the plane collision. It is dubbed “probably one of the largest conflicts we've ever seen in MTG”, or what is possibly a rip off of the plot of Pacific Rim.

Zhalfir

Zhalfir returns as its own plane to bring an Afrofantasy realm inspired by Black culture (Image: Wizards of the Coast).

Release date: 1 October, 2027

Formerly a part of the Dominaria plane, the nostalgic kingdom of Zhalfir is re-entering the MTG roster as its own plane. It will be an Afrofantasy magical realm inspired by the cultures of the Black diaspora, focusing on Afrocentric history, mythology, culture, and more.

Teferi Akosa famously phased Zhalfir out of existence during the original Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria to protect Zhalfir from the Phyrexians (and to some extent, Urza’s plans) a long time ago in Magic: The Gathering’s history.

Unfortunately, the phased out lands of Zhalfir were seemingly lost, and Teferi could not get them back. Following the events of the New Phyrexians’ invasion of the Multiverse many, many, many years later, Teferi finally managed to find himself back in Zhalfir.

By the end of the whole story, Zhalfir is now back as a new plane, after it did a swap with New Phyrexia. Zhalfir now comes with New Phyrexia’s (ex-Mirrodin) skies and five suns, while the survivors of Mirrodin before it turned into New Phyrexia were welcome into Zhalfir. 

Powered by the light and magic of the five suns, Zhalfir is perpetually busking in daytime, but this is contrasted by the presence of the spirit realm, an enigmatic and dangerous world of eternal darkness where ancestors and spirits go. Teferi will be making his return in this updated Afrofantasy world. 

The predominantly Black team working behind Zhalfir promises a plane that pulls together Afrocentric elements by working with many consultants, professors, and authors to help them stay true to their vision. It is highlighted as a set with stunning visuals that will help the community feel represented and empowered.

When are the new MTG sets coming out?

For 2027, three new sets will be released. A brand-new underwater plane, Nauctis, will arrive on 5 February, followed by Kamigawa: Titanbreach on 4 June, and Zhalfir on 1 October.

What else was announced?

Besides the announcements of the Multiverse sets, there are plans for four MagicCons in 2027, and a first for Tokyo, which will take place from 14-16 May. Expect more information about the upcoming MagicCons in 2027, as well as the upcoming sets to come out as we approach 2027.
