Well searching around the internet has led me to some fun little articles from local newspapers around the Northern California area talking about this year's big World Cyber Games. The last article that was mentioned didn't have StarCraft in it, but this one does; the San Mateo County Times has a report about the World Cyber Games and mentions our beloved StarCraft! While it is brief, it is the most talked about game in the article with a small interview with Tom Whittier, known to the StarCraft world as FroZ and Hero[pG]. Here's a piece of what FroZ had to say!
"I have a chance to place high, but don't see myself winning it all," said Tom Whittier, a video-game fanatic from Palo Alto who will be representing the United States. Whittier's specialty game is "StarCraft: Brood War," a science fiction strategy PC game that calls for building troops and destroying the enemy. "You've got to move quick, think quick and make fast decisions," said Whittier, who studies economics in his second year at UCLA and drove up for the event Tuesday. Whittier placed in the Top 15 in South Korea in 2002, but was "out of the money." His stiffest competition this year will be against professional game players from South Korea who are paid as much as $200,000 a year by sponsors. Whittier said they play 10 hours a day or more.
The rest of the article explains how this originated in Korea and how the whole concept and execution of World Cyber Games is akin to the Olympics. Specifically I explain it to people as "the Olympics of Computer and Video Gaming!" Everyone just keep an eye out for more interesting articles and PM one of the staff that is around and we'll post it up and give you credit!
