BATTLE REPORT: ToT)Mondragon( vs Nal_Testie
Game #1: ToT)Mondragon( (Protoss, 11:00) versus Nal_Testie (Terran, 05:00)Map: Parallel LinesReplay: » Download here
Getting things started on this exciting series was a pvt on the island map Parallel Lines. Mondragon opted to go with his protoss on the island map rather than play at a disadvantage with his zerg. Testie went with terran, and hoped to overthrow the forces of aiur with an initial victory. Mondragon started out with a fast expo to his natural, and then starting the standard gas/gate build. Testie kept everything normal, going for a gas/barracks and then a factory. He then started to make 2 starports, with harass/shuttle killing on his mind. Perhaps thinking testie was zerg, mondragon started with a 2 stargate 'sair tech, which didn't last long once he scouted the terran.
By the luck of the draw, mondragon's build actually benefited him, as the corsairs were able to hold off testie's wraiths. Testie immediately took his natural, determined not to fall behind in economy. He also tried a sneaky barracks-hidden-in-base trick, but it was discovered and the barracks ended up dying. Mondragon had obviously taken into account testie's lack of ground units, as he dropped 2 dragoons out of a shuttle on testie's natural, supported by now-upgraded corsairs. Ironically, testie tried to do the same thing, dropping tanks/scvs/wraiths in mondragon's natural, but there were too many dragoons to handle. A mob of angry scvs ganged up on and killed mondragon's drop at the same time. Both players secured the expos near their main, so the economic battle remained equal.
At this point, mondragon dropped 3 shuttles of dragoons/zealots on testie's natural, and this drop would be a lot more harmful. Tanks and scvs couldn't stop the drop, and the expo fell to the protoss forces. Mondragon took a third expo now, right below his second one. Another drop came from mondragon, this time on testie's second expansion. However, testie had been amassing many wraiths, with 2/2 upgrades, and beat the dragoons & templars very easily. Testie also sent a command center to a third expansion, and retook his natural. Mondragon decided to go all-out air, with a three-base economy backing him up. Carriers popped out of the stargates, and a huge air war was sure to come.
Mondragon took another expansion, and began to take control of the game with his air. Unfortunately, his luck would run out. After killing one of testie's bases, his attack on the second one was foiled when a wraith flank killed his 'sairs/carriers. Both of the players had divided up the whole map nearly, and were making giant armies of destruction. Mondragon did another huge attack on testie's new expo, with a dragoon force to protect against wraiths. Testie had made the decision to make battlecruisers - perhaps the game's best units. His wraiths actually overcame the drop, and the table began to turn to testie's favor, with a healthy economy and mass battlecruisers on their way.
Again, mondragon did another attack with carriers/corsairs/arbiters/dropped ground units, but his army was walloped by a ton of battlecruisers/wraiths, with a clever EMP bomb figured into the mix. Mondragon had about 10,000 minerals saved up, but not a lot of gas, and he need to act fast as 2 of his expos were razed to the ground by BCs. It should not be overlooked that testie had 3/3 upgrades for most of the game, and he was dominating at every turn. Then came the climax of the game. Testie was routinely killing another expansion, when suddenly a stasis field froze all of his BCs. Mondragon then landed dragoons/templars, and weakened many of the battlecruisers when they tried to run away.
You froze my battlecruisers!
From that move, mondragon had time to build interceptors, and his carriers went after and killed most of the BCs. Testie was broke, and had almost no army left. He tried one final attack, but it was stopped easily and he conceded the game.
ToT)Mondragon( 1-0 Nal_Testie
Game #2: ToT)Mondragon( (Zerg, 8:00) versus Nal_Testie (Terran, 11:00)Map: Gaema GowonReplay: » Download here
Both players decided to play this game pretty standard. Mondragon went for a 12 hatchery 11 pool fast expo build, and testie did the dual-barracks that you see in 99% of tvz games. Mondragon built his third hatch on the ramp near his second natural, to prevent m&m forces from slipping up there. Testie walked out of his base with an intimidating army of marines/medics, and mondragon responded by building 7(!) sunkens at his natural, plus three more on the ramp. Testie still tried to break the defense, and was almost successful, but lings/drones came to support the sunkens and mondragon lived.
Mondragon tried to do some harass with his mutalisks (he did spire tech), but wasn't able to do a lot of damage. Testie then made the blunder that probably cost him the game. Mondragon burrowed 7 lurkers near testie's huge m&m force. Testie scanned, and actually attacked the lurkers with his whole army. I'm not sure what testie was thinking by doing that, but either way, he lost everything, and 2 marines ran away with the medics. Testie had expanded, and mondragon dropped lurkers on the ramp above, killing scvs. Mondragon's scourge killed the unprotected vessels that were sitting on top of the ramp. Testie had also scouted mondragon's new expansion, and walked over to kill it.
How would you like your m&m served?
Perhaps busy with a second lurker drop on his ramp, testie's m&m force walked right into mondragon's lurkers on the ramp of his new expansion. He suffered significant losses, and the game was slipping away from him. There were a couple minor skirmishes, but nothing major. Testie gave up after yet another lurker drop hurt his economy.
ToT)Mondragon( 2-0 Nal_Testie
Game #3: ToT)Mondragon( (Zerg, 04:00) versus Nal_Testie (Terran, 11:00)Map: NostalgiaReplay: » Download here
Nostalgia was recently discovered to be the most balanced map in the pro leagues, with approximately a 50/50 win/loss ratio for every race. Both players started off with the same builds as game 2, except that mondragon's drone slipped into testie's base, and stole his geyser. Testie decided to switch it up a little, and he made another command center after just 3 marines. He also increased to 3 barracks, and made an academy. Mondragon made the speedling upgrade, and also did 2 hatch lurkers. With his third hatchery, he took another expo, because the natural at nostalgia does not have gas.
In a clever move, mondragon lured testie's forces away, and then ran into his main with lurkers. Testie lost a big portion of his army to quell the attack. He then took another expansion. Testie tried unsuccessfully to harass with a dropship, and looked to already be at a disadvantage in the game. Testie killed one of the zerg expansions with good micro. Again, mondragon attacked testie's empty base, and ran his lurkers up the ramp when forces arrived to stop him. This bought mondragon time to make a hive - which is his most lethal weapon.
Mondragon attacked testie's natural with guardians/cracklings, but testie survived. For the third time, mondragon made a run at testie's empty expansion when his army left. This time, however, mondragon was armed with dark swarm. The expo fell, and testie was in dire straits because he had a bad economy and a hive unit zerg aiming at him. Dark swarm was a deciding factor in this game. Testie's army was being beaten left and right, dispite a great micro effort by the canadian. Then, scourges blew up all but one of testie's vessels. Mondragon had thrown ultras into the mix, and testie was forced to cede the match after a fantastic series of battles.
Boom.
ToT)Mondragon( 3-0 Nal_Testie
Game #4: ToT)Mondragon( (Protoss, 11:00) versus Nal_Testie (Zerg, 05:00)Map: Parallel LinesReplay: » Download here
Down three-nil, testie opened up with a very creative strat. It began with a 1 hatch lurker build on the parallel lines map. Mondragon opened up again with a fast expo, and then following up with corsairs from 2 stargates. Testie built a spire, as well as a hatchery at his natural, and immediately made spore colonies + air armor. At this point, things began to get interesting. Testie made a hive very fast, as well as a second spire. Mondragon had made reavers already, and had done a reaver/sair drop on testie's expo. The hatchery died, but mondragon's sairs were rocked by the air power that testie now had. Testie also took another expansion, to match the new one that mondragon had just built. Mondragon could not tackle testie's air superiority, and testie actually began to incorporate queens into the array.
As testie sieged mondragon's expansion, his ensnare inhibited the 'sairs from fighting well. However, as usual mondragon had an answer: maelstrom. Out of a shuttle popped 2 dark archons, and testie's army was frozen while still taking damage. Testie was forced to run, and mondragon had saved himself brilliantly. Testie was still able to kill an expo of mondragon's, and now had 3/2 upgrades. A couple of well placed dt drops by mondragon took out an expo and a lot of drones from another one. Both players were on the offense.
Testie won a huge battle shortly after, where ensnare proved more effective than the maelstrom. All of mondragon's 'sairs died. Testie had an advantage now, and mondragon once again turned to the aid of carriers. He again showed great creativity by parasiting mondragon's 'sair, so he had a "head's up" as to where he would be attacked. Unfortunately for testie, despite all of his innovative moves and overall great play, he just couldn't put mondragon away. Mondragon began to win some air fights, and started to improve his economy. Mondragon's expos were a lot more secure, since he protected them with cannons, archons, storm & carriers. Testie was just trying to keep up now, and was very poor. Mondragon took over and won the game with a dominating late-game air force.
A "magical" air battle.

Mondragon wins the series as well as the bw4ever invite tourney. His prize is 50 euros, sponsored by latingamers.com Congrats to mondragon for winning this tourney in dominating fashion, and also congrats to testie for making it this far and putting up a great fight vs the German machine. After the match, our very own Shadow caught up with mondragon and interviewed him.
SG-Shadow: first of all, gw winning
SG-Shadow: game 1 and 4 rocked
Mondragon: thx =)
Mondragon: both parallel lines =)
SG-Shadow: i've got "a few" questions, you got a couple mins
Mondragon: yeb sure
SG-Shadow: First of all, for those who dont know, your name, age, location..?
Mondragon: Christoph, 17, Neumarkt - Germany
SG-Shadow: How long have you been playing SC?
Mondragon: puuh .. I think 5 years or so :p
Mondragon: became more and more serious :P
SG-Shadow: ok.. like most pros
SG-Shadow: How did you come up with your name then? To me it either sounds like a misspelled version of "Moon Dragoon", or a product of file planet's random name generator...
Mondragon: Nono. It was no misspelling tho!:P It is / was a goalkeeper of Columbia which played in Turkey I think. The name just impressed me and then I took it
SG-Shadow: His name was mondragon? cool
Mondragon: yea :)
SG-Shadow: What about your clan then, ToT? When did you start it up, and what happened?
Mondragon: Actually my brother founded ToT. After 2 months I joined ToT and we made ToT what it is now. Step by step he became more and more inactive though. He still makes the website of ToT with Dari at the moment.
SG-Shadow: Now you are an international clan, and almost everyone know of you
SG-Shadow: Did you ever.. think it was going to go this far?
Mondragon: no I never thought so. It just started after WiLLEt joining us I think ;)
Mondragon: by the way some greetings to Willi: You should restart playing bw :D
SG-Shadow: Yeah, certainly
SG-Shadow: he'll come back crying when he reads
SG-Shadow: Have you got a lot of power in your teamwork at ToT, or is it just a 1v1-clan?
Mondragon: Nono. Actually there should be a kind of democracy :P There will always be a voting for every major event / invite or something like that, which ToT plans
SG-Shadow: So you dont have a real leader?
SG-Shadow: like a dictator
Mondragon: The only one is Ilvy! :P
SG-Shadow: A couple of weeks ago, the americal protoss-player Rekrul went to korea, to play for Hexatron.. Do you think he earned it?
SG-Shadow: Or should you have gone instead?
Mondragon: If you have got an invite of a korean progaming team, you always deserved it. The koreans should know who they are inviting :P
SG-Shadow: when are you gonna be invited then?
Mondragon: I should not have gone because it is useless to go there for me. At the moment school is more important
SG-Shadow: ah..
SG-Shadow: I see
Mondragon: Never ever!
Mondragon: Progaming is just a temporary thing so just let it be :P
SG-Shadow: progaming rocks, but good clans last forever =)
SG-Shadow: At WCG last year, when Fisheye made it to the finals, you didn't participate.. why?
Mondragon: At the beginning of the group stages I was on my holidays .. :(
SG-Shadow: ok.. but then you are participating this year?
Mondragon: I think so yes
SG-Shadow: you're going for the gold medal, right
Mondragon: we will see :P
SG-Shadow: yeah
SG-Shadow: Are germany going to win clanbase's nation wars?
Mondragon: Hopefully germany will win but it will be a close final between Canada and Germany I think :P
SG-Shadow: you've got a very strong line up, and crushed netherlands
SG-Shadow: any comments on that one? =P
Mondragon: hello rob 8D thats enough
SG-Shadow: =D
SG-Shadow: Where do you most often search for games? Neo game-i?
Mondragon: I don't play any games on Neo Gamei. Instead of playing there I play on europe and west only
SG-Shadow: But you were ranked #7 on starGate
SG-Shadow: then stopped playing =/
Mondragon: yea but there were not that much users on stargate after all
SG-Shadow: everyone went to neo gamei
SG-Shadow: How much do you play every day then?
Mondragon: I do not like to play there because you cannot chat or something like that. It is only playing, playing and playing ...
SG-Shadow: but totally
SG-Shadow: on europe and west
Mondragon: I cant judge that.. Sometimes more sometimes less
Mondragon: :P
Mondragon: Some weeks ago I didnt play more than 3 games a day because my motivation was fucked up :P
SG-Shadow: I know, that happens
SG-Shadow: Have any rivals?
SG-Shadow: that you play often
Mondragon: Hopefully I dont have any :P
SG-Shadow: ..you play a lot vs testie
SG-Shadow: like today ^_^
Mondragon: Well, testie and me are kinda friends
Mondragon: :P
SG-Shadow: Yeah, I saw that.. also counts for something
SG-Shadow: What music do you listen to while playing?
Mondragon: metal only!
Mondragon: If I don't listen to metal my apm would be around 100 I guess :D
SG-Shadow: Heard of the group "Crush 40"?
SG-Shadow: It helps APM a lot
SG-Shadow: =)
Mondragon: hmm... no! never heard of
SG-Shadow: they rock =)
Mondragon: maybe :P
Mondragon: I prefer Blind Guardian, Axel Rudi Pell, Iced Earth and so on though :P
SG-Shadow: Anyway, what is the strongest and weakest part of your playing?
Mondragon: Do I have to tell it? :P
SG-Shadow: yes, and then we'll use it against you in WCG 2004
SG-Shadow: ;-)
Mondragon: nahnah... I hate to be dropped at 2 or 3 position at one time. My apm is too low for that :P
Mondragon: never
Mondragon: :P
SG-Shadow: APM say nothing, skills say everything
SG-Shadow: So you're not abusing hotkeys like the koreans?
Mondragon: Nah...
Mondragon: My guess is that the koreans are sweating while playing when they have got 300 apm and more
Mondragon: -.-
SG-Shadow: Do you think it's good with mandatory BWScanner on WGT and provate gateways?
Mondragon: yea why not? Noone wants to play vs a hacker
SG-Shadow: True
SG-Shadow: But it's time to open your heart: Have you ever used a hack?
Mondragon: never
SG-Shadow: good =D
SG-Shadow: If you had, would you admit it?
Mondragon: yea sure
SG-Shadow: What does your family and friends think about your SC-playing? Are they exited to hear how a tournament went, asking you afterwards, or don't you tell them anything?
Mondragon: There are some who care a lot and some who do not care a shit about it. So it is totally balanced :P
SG-Shadow: I guess your friends must be pretty impressed
Mondragon: some are yes ;)
SG-Shadow: Do you play any other games than SC?
SG-Shadow: "You shall have no other gods before me", you know... =P
Mondragon: a little bit counterstrike... and carom (online billard) with breakdown :D
Mondragon: haha ;)
SG-Shadow: =)
SG-Shadow: How much money have you earned from SC?
Mondragon: isnt that much. But I guess 500-600 euros
SG-Shadow: That's ok for a hobby
Mondragon: yea for sure
SG-Shadow: But how much have you spent on it, buying new keyboards and mice to better fit your style..?
Mondragon: I only buy the cheapest keyboards which are available and this mouse I've got since 3 or 4 years I think ;)
SG-Shadow: ^^
SG-Shadow: Ok, tell me now: How long will this last? Will you still be the best european in one year?
Mondragon: Lets see
Mondragon: btw, am I the best european atm? =D
SG-Shadow: Well.. you won BW4eVer
Mondragon: luck
Mondragon: testie has got a bad day
SG-Shadow: skill > luck
SG-Shadow: =P
Mondragon: Usually I won't never win 4:0 vs him
SG-Shadow: I heard you lost 3-4 in WCT
SG-Shadow: vs him
Mondragon: no 1-4
SG-Shadow: oh ok
SG-Shadow: so then he owned you
SG-Shadow: Guess you're even now
Mondragon: some yes :D
Mondragon: It was just my revenge!
SG-Shadow: =D
