[s]starcraft[/s]The Korean model of big telephone and telecommunication corporations using online gamers to market their products has without a doubt been a success and is slowly creating a small army of gamers that play, or rather should I say work, night and day for the dream of becoming a professional gamer. I have no doubt that this trend will extend itself to industries outside of Korea. One can already see this happening in China. It's only a question of time; in business what makes money will always be fashionable.

Once a pro-gamer achieves pro-gaming status, all bets are off. He or she is then free to pursue a short career in advertising, modelling or insert themselves somewhere in the hundreds niches of the gaming industry. Grrrr and Everlast back in 2000 failed in creating in a joint venture to create a new RTS game only because I suspect online gaming was still a gamble in the eyes of many conservative investors. Had they tried in today's atmosphere they would not have failed.

We all know that Grrr today is making some of his income through a web based store that sells computer and gamer appliances. I recently found news about a Japanese and Chinese joint venture that makes games for mobile phones, called BBMF, that reminded me of Grrr's and Everlast's near miss to economical bliss.

Let me quote part of the article.

We have a team of 20 top managers. Our chief game designer is Canadian Chinese - and is ranked the number 16 Starcraft player in the world (which he could almost make a living from playing competitively).I have an inkling that they have exaggerated this gamers' world standing, but even if they did, this only makes it more significant for pro-gamers. Problem is I could not find his name. The job market for gamers is getting more interesting, not as years go by, but as months go by.

Will companies that make games for mobile phones succeed? Who cares! I am sure, even if they do not, our mentioned pro-gamer will have made some money and has a new entry on his C.V. Now if they do, this pro-gamer is set up for life.

Check the whole article if you have time to spare, it's a rather boring read if you are not interested in the gaming market but you can find the quoted excerpt under the “how are you structured?” title.
