Despite countless e-mails, poll votes, forum threads and supporters; It is now time to realize the tough defeat. Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) officially stated that they won't host an official Starcraft tournament for the Winter's event.

As far back as December last year, GosuGamers » happily announced the news coming from CPL - Starcraft would be included in the Winter Event of 2004. It was after a hard and bitter fight in the official poll of the winter's tournament that Starcraft ended up in the first place, shared with Battlefield 1942. Battlefield was supposed to be hosted as a 64 clan tournament in the Summer's event this year. The tournament was cancelled, however, due to lack of interest (based on number of registered clans after a long time of open registration).

"We have simply decided not to host Starcraft"
Tonya Welch, CPL Communications Director, stated: "It was 8 months ago that the poll in question was taken. A lot can change, both within our organization and within the gaming industry/community, in 8 months."

A battle well worthy the Starcraft community
GosuGamers among the other leading Starcraft-community sites gathered our united community's strength and showed CPL that we are still to count with. GosuGamers have received copies of a large number of e-mails directed to the CPL staff regarding this issue and together we gathered support to reach 35% in the poll. This time, however, the opinions of the gamers or the number of players interesting in participating in a certain event can not alone decide whether an event of this size can accept the game to be hosted. Other factors such as the sponsor question affects the list of the official games. Another reason might be that World Cyber Games, CPL's competitor, always have supported Starcraft (and always will?) and it's been one of WCG's main games.

There is still hope!
Angel Munoz
CPL PresidentIn a very interesting interview at SoGamed, Angel Munoz (CPL President) discussed the fact that Counter-Strike might be dropped from CPL events in the future. One of the reasons he mentions is the fact that Counter-Strike is not a great spectator E-Sport. Munoz explains that CPL has ambitions to cover their events in television channels such as MTV or other entertainment-based channels reaching out to a lot of people. In such broadcast, Counter-Strike would not fit as an official game because of its number of players (10)in each game; A person who has never before watched this particular game would not understand the course of events simply because there is too much happening at the same time. Munoz furthermore specifically said that he would prefer more one on one games which would name a winning player rather than a winning clan.

With this said, we believe that it is still very doubtful whether Starcraft would be included in the official CPL game list in the future. Nevertheless, they know we're here and they've seen the potential of the game. We can always hope and we promise to keep monitoring and encouraging the CPL Staff regarding Starcraft as an official game.

Official games of CPL Winter 2004 are:

Counter-Strike 1.6
DOOM III
