In the past couple years, Iaroslav Korchagin otherwise known as Play.Enemy (picture) has been making quite a name for himself. He was able to achieve 1st in WGT Season 11 (1v1) and the BW4ever BKC5 Tournament. However, his most known achievements come from playing offline. He managed to finish in 2nd place at both WCG Ukraine 2004 and 2005 just behind mYm.yAn. He has also won countless USL LAN Tournaments along with placing well at several ASUS Events in Russia.
In Singapore, he got the opportunity to face XellOs in a match broadcasted on WCG TV. In the match, he was able to give the pro-gamer quite a fight up until the end. That game was said to have impressed both Koreans and Non-Koreans alike who were unaware of his skill.
A short interview with Play.Enemy
When did you feel that you really started to make a name for yourself in the community?
For Ukrainian and Russian community it started long time ago, after my win on the biggest at that time tourney that was held in Odessa (Ukraine), then Kiev and then some more other cities in Ukraine. These championships actually always included Ukrainian + top Russian players (as always for big Lans here). Then, for Europe community there were some victories in online championships, taking first places in ladders such as WGT, Gamei, top20 PGT, defeating some famous Korean, Chinese and European players. Of course I was really amazed when I went out of my room after game with Xellos on the stage in Singapore. I thought no one would really be impressed by our game much, but I was surrounded by a lot of korean fans asking me to make a photo with them and give some autographs. All that together made me feel really wonderful feelings.
Androide is famous for his temper and frequent scandals, how are your relations between him and you? Or for that matter Russian SC players and Ukrainian SC players? Is there a difference?
Hm, very interesting question though. Yes, Androide really has some ambitions and is arrogant sometimes, but he�s a clever guy in general and isn�t so bad if you know him better. As to our relations, he actually underestimated me before. After we have practiced some before and during WCG 2005 Final his opinion changed a lot, cause I won most part of our games. And what was even more important we�ve found one simultaneous quality for both of us � faith in yourself and in your victory. Comparing Ukrainian and Russian players I should admit one fact � Russia is a county of terrans and Ukraine � of protoss ;)
How many active Ukraine players are there in total in your best guess and is SC common game in Ukraine LANs?
Thanks to our amazing Ukrainian Starcraft League (USL), Stacraft grows up in Ukraine really fast and attract more and more people to each tourney. A year ago about only 15-20 people usually came to Kiev Lan party, now this number increased to 120! And now they are not only Ukrainians, each time we�re being visited by some top Russian players such as mYm.yAn, mYm.A2, 3D.Creativ and sometime others. These tourneys are held in Kiev but people come to them from many other cities as well. Also it was very difficult with sponsoring here but now, thanks to our main organizer Dr.Shad, prizes are increasing all the time and tourneys become better and better. This tourney is a regular league (one tourney per month) and each time counts more people. So Ukrainian SC community becomes stronger, wider and has now much more opportunities to improve their skills and win some really nice prizes. And all that is not only for SC! Our cybersport idol Shad is making now similar leagues for other games as well. They are FIFA, NFS, Warcraft for now and could include some more if enough people would be interested in those games. The movies creator, Dima "Spitfire" Shevchenko does an excellent job in putting many great plays together without it being full of useless effects. The editing is good and the soundtrack includes a nice variety of music. Overall, this is one of the best movies that I have seen dedicated to a particular player.
