The MBC maps this season are Blitz X, Longinus II, Reverse Temple and Desert Fox. The last three were on display today. There has been plenty of discussion on Reverse Temple, although Desert Fox is the more radical and challenging balance-wise map. Check the links at the bottom for the newspost about the maps.
The way the Survivor league works is that there are some offline qualifiers and some who dropped down from the previous MSL. These are put into a group of four and two qualify for the next MSL. All the games are best of one. The two people who win their first game, face each other for one of the spots. The two who lost their first game fight to be able to meet the loser from the winners match. The winner of this match takes the second spot.
YellOw spawned at 6, while 910 landed at 9. The zerg decided to go with a 9pool, 12hatch expo build and then eventually a 3rd hatch in his main. The terran from the MBC Hero team did a rather unorthodox build. He went 1barrack, gas. This meant he had to use some scvs to stop the lings at his ramp, but it also meant that his academy was very fast. With some bats 910 could more out easily and position himself outside YellOw's base and started building turrets. He also started a factory near the middle temple and added some barracks in his base. The OGN Sparkyz zerg had of course seen his early gas build and went for a spire. As the mutas popped from their eggs they headed straight for the terran base, but got scared off by a single turret. He did however manage to intercept some of the marines 910 sent to reinforce his contain and start harassing the factory and emerging tanks. He did infact manage to take out the proxy factory with his muta force. The plan was obviously to take out the two remaining tanks with his mutas and buy himself some time, but when he killed the first one 910 thought it was about time to move in and end things with his medic, marines and firebat force. After some quick micro back and forth YellOw was forced to type out. GG
Reach warped in at 6 and build his first pylon at his natural followed by a quick nexus and then cannons. oDin spawned at 3 and went with a 12 hatch, 11 pool build. Upon seeing Reach's quick expansion the Samsung Khan player figured he might as well exploit it and took his mineral only while putting up a spire and a den to protect from the corsairs from Reach. The protoss teched up to reaver while adding 4 gateways in his base. The zerg responded with taking the 12 natural and adding three evolution chambers. Reach walked his 3 reavers the short distance to the 3 mineral only and tried to do some damage, but he attacked from the bottom in an effort to avoid the lurkers, but this made the reavers too vulnerable and he lost two of them before he pulled back. On the way back he didn't protect his last reaver and oDin killed that as well. A failed attack, but it had given Reach the time to take his mineral only just in time for oDin's counter attack with hydraling and lurkers. Reach had started observers and templars, but was not done as the attack hit. He still managed to hold on with the help of cannons until the observer arrived and he could clean up the rest of them. Both players had lost quite a bit and some recovery time followed in which Reach spotted the zergs natural expo at 12 and oDin started his hive. He also exped to 12 main and destroyed the temple in the middle (yes, you can destroy it now!!). The KTF protoss decided it was time to take out 12 and moved on it with a large force. Despite some excellent storms the zerg was able to stop it quite easily and counter attack 9 before the seven or so cannons had time to finish. He also took the 12 mineral only and added three extra hatcheries there. From here on it it was zerg all the way. Reach tried some storm drops, with some success, but oDin just attacked the front. On the second try he broke through and forced Reach to concede. GG
The winner here would qualify for MSL, while the loser would have to win against the winner in the losers game. oDin (at 7) did a very similar opening to the game against Reach and 910 (at 3) did however change his build quite a bit. He blocked his entrance with a barrack and two supplies before taking his natural and his gas in main. From here on he rushed the science facility and started making a vessel and reasearching irradiate before adding the second barrack. In the mean time oDin had taken a hidden expo at 12 and started his spire. Once the mutas popped they headed for 910's natural, but ran into a vessel with irradiate. oDin had some trouble separating his mutas and lost two or three and lots of the health of some others. Suddenly 910 had about 2 groups of MMF, 4 tanks and 2 vessels. As he moved out oDin sacrificed some lings and muta in order to get the 2 vessels, but 910 quickly got another to meet his forces at oDin's doorstep where lurkers where waiting. oDin took his main force around 910 troops and successfully killed off a group of reinforcing marines, but he could simply not deal with the main force of the terran and had to give up. GG and 910[Ete] from MBC Hero is qualified for the MSL!
Reach warped in at 7, while YellOw spawned at 11. The zerg went for a normal 12 hatch, 11 pool build while the protoss put down 2 gateways in his natural choke to get some early pressure going. Reach, to great excitement of the audience and especially the commentator, managed to get a drone kill with his scouting probe, but didn't do too much damage with his early zealots besides forcing YellOw to put down 2 sunkens. After this early action Reach took his natural and added cannons behind his gateways while YellOw massed lings. The zerg decided to move all in, in an effort to finish the game quickly. The 4 zealots and 2 cannons of Reach held up while the zerg wasted a lot of lings. From this point on the protoss was in control. He massed zealots and a few DTs while waiting for his observers so he could see the lurkers. Then he marched out and YellOw knew he was dead. GG and YellOw[Name] from OGN Sparkyz will not be appearing in the MSL this time around.
The winner here would join 910 in the MSL and it looked like Reach was keen for revenge. This map is a bit special though. You have to destroy some neutral buildings to get to your natural, which is filled with creep due to a creep colony being placed there. oDin was slightly faster in destroying his neutral building and could of course exp directly after that. Reach had to destroy the colony and wait for the creep to retreat. Protoss went for a stargate and started teching towards reavers while the zerg went with a den and shortly after a spire. Reach was a bit sloppy with the corsairs and lost 2 and also allowed oDin to move his hydras in overlords around the map without too much trouble. oDin dropped behind the natural of Reach and was met with a cannon and 2 reaver. oDin promtly took out all of that, but didn't do any damage to the economy of Reach as the reinforcements arrived in a timely fashion. In the mean time oDin had taken his mineral only and was starting an exp at 1, which Reach attacked. He took it out quite easily with corsair with web and reavers. oDin quickly retakes it however and morphs a greater spire. At this point Reach had finally managed to take his mineral only and was harrassing with reaver drops. However, as the devourers and in general a huge zerg airforce was roaming the map he was too scared to back them up properly with corsairs. It was not enough. oDin had a huge air force and morphed some of it into guardians to kill Reach's mineral only. He was successful in killing it, but a second after Reach brought down his dark archon and maelstromed much of the remaining force, but he didn't have enough corsairs and templars to get rid of them. A very nice move, but too little, too late for Reach. GG and KTF's Reach is not qualifed for MSL but Samsung Khan's oDin is.
It is difficult to say much about the new maps after so few games. The only significant change on Longinus II seems to be the mineral tweak in the mains. Reverse Temple did not seem too bad to me, but we'll see once they start playing TvP on it. Desert Fox seems to favor zerg a bit in ZvP due to the creep in the natural, but it does have 10 minerals in the main, so.... We'll have to give it a few games and see.
MBC Survivor League - Group A
YellOw[Name] vs 910[Ete] Reverse Temple
Reach vs oDin Reverse Temple
oDin vs 910[Ete] Longinus II
YellOw[Name] vs Reach Longinus II oDin vs Reach Desert Fox
Reach and YellOw[Name] are out, oDin and 910 march on to the MSL. I guess the Protoss fans are disappointed by Reach, but 910 will be very interesting to watch as he won both his games today with relative ease and didn't use your standard builds. If you want to download a single VOD from all these games I recommend 910's game vs oDin, just to see his dominance with an unorthodox build and how important that early irradiate was.
