To stay alive during early combat encounters in Absolum, shorten your melee attack strings and immediately dash away to cancel combo recovery whenever an enemy is not staggered. Committing to full punch chains without reading enemy reactions leaves you vulnerable to off-screen strikes and hyper-armored counter-attacks.
Controlling Melee Attacks and Stagger
Executing long combo strings without checking enemy reactions is the primary cause of early damage. When initiating an attack string, observe how the enemy reacts to the initial hits before continuing:
- Watch for flinch visual cues: If an enemy flinches or staggers on impact, you can safely extend short punch chains.
- Identify hyper-armor: If an enemy ignores your strike without flinching, stop attacking immediately. Unresponsive enemies are typically hyper-armored or preparing a counter-strike.
- Disengage early: Exit attack animations before completing the full combo unless your target is clearly incapacitated.
Positioning with Dash Canceling
Dashing in Absolum serves as both a positioning tool and an animation cancel. Instead of standing still to complete a full combo, dash after landing initial hits to reset your position and neutral stance.
- Circle the perimeter: Dashing straight into dense enemy clusters leaves your back exposed. Dash around the outer perimeter of the room to group foes together.
- Utilize screen space and the Z-axis: Stay near the center of the active area to maintain clear sightlines. Move vertically along the Z-axis to stay out of the direct path of charging foes.
- Reset spacing when cornered: If forced against the screen boundary, prioritize escaping over dealing damage. Spend time repositioning to open space to force enemies to path toward you again.
Baiting and Punishing Enemy Attacks
Dense enemy groups and tougher foes require a hit-and-run cycle rather than direct continuous damage:
- Trigger the attack window: Initiate a brief attack string to draw out an enemy reaction.
- Dash on telegraphs: Watch for stance shifts or visual telegraphs that signal an incoming strike, then dash backward or sideways immediately.
- Punish the whiff: Once the enemy's attack misses, move back in during their recovery window to deal safe damage.
Focusing on short attack chains paired with tactical dashing conserves your health, allowing you to survive longer in early runs while learning enemy patterns.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Absolum articles next.
Good guide for Absolum players. The early game part was useful.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
This saved me time in the early game.
