To handle the Ordeals system in Absolum, activate additive difficulty modifiers on the pre-run screen before entering a map. Stacking these modifiers increases enemy strength and environmental hazards, but it also corrupts the map layout, guarantees extra Elite spawns, and boosts high-rarity loot and currency drop rates.

Setting Up Ordeal Modifiers

Access the Ordeals menu on the pre-run setup screen to select your run conditions. Modifiers scale enemy health and damage while altering specific encounter mechanics. Rather than applying a flat difficulty increase, each option penalizes a specific aspect of play—such as reducing dash distance, slowing stamina regeneration, or increasing enemy attack speed and mob density.

When choosing modifiers, align them with your character's combat style:

  • Avoid stamina debuffs on dodge-reliant characters: If your hero depends on continuous mobility to avoid damage, bypass modifiers that restrict dash distance or stamina refill rates.
  • Avoid mob density modifiers on single-target builds: If your character lacks strong area-of-effect abilities, stacking enemy density debuffs will cause high-health mobs to overwhelm you.
  • Match rewards to gear gaps: Preview the run rewards before locking in your choices. Certain modifier combinations raise the drop rates of specific item categories, allowing you to target your weakest equipment slot.

Activating high-difficulty Ordeal modifiers triggers a corrupted map state. Corrupted maps feature distinct visual terrain changes and altered enemy silhouettes. These maps introduce environmental hazards that punish standing still, while spawning corrupted enemies equipped with unique attack patterns or immunity shields.

Despite the elevated danger, corrupted maps provide the most reliable farming route for end-game gear and rare crafting materials due to high Elite enemy density. Handle these combat encounters by managing targets systematically:

  1. Identify Elites immediately: As soon as you enter a room, locate the Elite silhouette before engaging basic mobs.
  2. Unload burst damage: Use your highest-damage cooldowns to eliminate the Elite early. Leaving Elites alive while fighting smaller enemies allows additive Ordeal damage debuffs to drain your health quickly.
  3. Conserve dashes for traps: Reserve dodge movements for avoiding environmental hazards and area-of-effect floor traps rather than using them strictly for offensive positioning.
  4. Track active modifier synergies: Check which enemy types receive empowered damage from your active Ordeals so you do not get caught off-guard by empowered minion attacks.

Adjusting Builds for High Ordeal Tiers

Generalized builds struggle under the pressure of stacked Ordeal modifiers. High-tier corrupted enemies possess large health pools that quickly outlast defensive cooldowns if your offensive output is too low.

To survive higher Ordeal tiers, allocate your ability points heavily into a primary damage mechanic, such as dedicated burst damage scaling or sustained damage-over-time. Specializing your damage output ensures you can eliminate gatekeeper Elites quickly, keeping room clear times manageable and preserving your limited healing resources for the rest of the run.
