To start strong in Arena of Valor, adjust your targeting controls before entering matches, follow dynamic lane assignments based on river objectives, and reserve all currency exclusively for Level 3 Arcana. Mastering these fundamentals ensures steady gold income, clean teamfight execution, and early map control.
Configure Targeting Controls
Default combat settings target enemies based on raw health percentages, often forcing your hero to attack high-health tanks or accidentally target enemy heroes while attempting to siege structures. Update these settings in the control menu before queuing:
- Minion and Tower Attack Method: Enable this setting immediately. It replaces your standard attack button with three distinct inputs: a standard attack button, a minion-targeting button, and a tower-targeting button. This allows you to safely chip towers without unintentionally hitting defending heroes and drawing tower retribution damage.
- Avatar Lock: Turn on Avatar Lock to display small enemy portraits beside your ability icons. Tapping an enemy portrait locks your basic attacks and single-target spells onto that specific target, ensuring you strike high-priority carries during crowded teamfights.
- Manual Ability Aiming: Drag skillshot indicators manually rather than tapping them. Tapping fires at an enemy's current position, whereas dragging allows you to lead targets based on their movement.
Identify Dynamic Lane Assignments
Lanes in Arena of Valor are defined by the positions of the Abyssal Dragon and the Dark Slayer rather than fixed top and bottom directions. Because your team's camera perspective rotates depending on your spawn side, check the minimap icons at the start of each match to find your correct lane.
| Role | Position | Primary Objective |
|---|---|---|
| Marksman (ADC) | Abyssal Dragon Lane | Farm safely, scale into late-game physical damage, and assist with Dragon takes. |
| Support / Roamer | Abyssal Dragon Lane or Mid | Scout brush, protect vulnerable carries, and support lane rotations. |
| Mage | Mid Lane | Clear minion waves quickly and rotate to side lanes to support skirmishes. |
| Warrior / Tank | Dark Slayer Lane | Duel solo opponents, absorb pressure, and build defensive durability. |
| Assassin / Jungler | Jungle (both quadrants) | Clear monster camps to reach Level 4 quickly, execute ganks, and secure neutral river bosses. |
Minion waves grant localized gold and experience. Avoid lingering in a teammate's lane during early levels, as splitting minion waves slows down their level progression and delays essential ability unlocks.
Early Farming and Jungle Etiquette
Matches are won by taking objectives and building an economic advantage rather than chasing kills across the map.
- Secure Last Hits: Deal the killing blow to lane minions whenever possible to earn bonus gold.
- Leave Early Jungle Camps: Do not take jungle monsters during the first four to five minutes of a match. Junglers rely on full camp clears with the Punish talent to hit Level 4 and unlock their ultimate ability. Stealing camps delays their ganks and weakens your team's ability to contest the river.
- Crash Waves Before Recalling: After forcing an opponent to recall or securing an elimination, push your minion wave into their defensive tower before backing to base. This forces the tower to destroy your minions, denying the enemy gold while chipping the structure's durability.
- Prioritize River Bosses: Look to contest the Abyssal Dragon near the two-minute mark. Slaying it awards team-wide gold and experience. Later in the match, defeat the Dark Slayer to obtain enhanced health regeneration and stronger pushing power against high-ground defenses.
- Use Brush for Vision Control: Standing in tall grass conceals your hero completely from enemy sight unless an opponent enters the same patch or you attack from within it. Use bushes to ambush approaching rotations or recall safely.
Build Level 3 Arcana and Adapt Equipment
The Arcana system provides flat baseline stat increases to heroes from the start of a match. Fully slotted pages offer notable advantages in penetration, attack speed, and cooldown reduction.
- Skip Lower Tiers: Never spend gold or Arcana fragments on Level 1 or Level 2 Arcana. Save all resources exclusively for permanent Level 3 tiles.
- Prioritize Universal Pages: Build versatile pages first rather than hero-specific stats. Physical damage dealers benefit broadly from armor penetration tiles such as Onslaught and Skewer. Magic damage dealers benefit from universal magic pierce sets such as Violate and Flurry.
- Adjust Item Builds Manually: While default builds are adequate for basic play, use the in-game shop to adapt to specific enemy team compositions. Purchase anti-healing items such as Tome of the Reaper or Curse of Death when facing sustained healing heroes like Taara, or equip Medallion of Troy to survive burst magic damage.
