To survive enemy dives as a marksman in Arena of Valor, anchor directly behind your frontline tanks, stay out of sight until enemy burst skills are spent, and strike the nearest safe target from maximum basic attack range. Prioritizing self-preservation over chasing opposing backliners allows you to deliver continuous sustained physical damage throughout standard 5v5 teamfights.
Anchor Behind Frontline Tanks
Always keep allied tanks and support initiators between yourself and the enemy team. Carries provide high sustained damage in the late game, making them the primary targets for opposing divers. Stepping ahead of your support negates your team's formation and exposes you to immediate crowd control.
- Use frontline hitboxes: Treat tanks such as Thane, Baldum, or Lumburr as physical shields to absorb incoming skill shots and block direct advance routes.
- Target the nearest threat: Attack the closest safely targetable enemy at the edge of your basic attack range. Bypassing enemy tanks to reach mages forces you into dangerous engagement ranges; wearing down opposing warriors and tanks from safety is the correct play.
Track Assassin Cooldowns Before Stepping Up
Remain hidden in the fog of war or stay well outside combat range until mobile enemy divers reveal themselves and exhaust key abilities. Jungle assassins such as Nakroth, Murad, and Kriknak, along with burst mages like Liliana and Raz, rely on flanks and ambush angles to burst marksmen down instantly. If an enemy diver is missing from the minimap during a fight, assume they are waiting in an adjacent bush.
| Threat Type | Enemy Examples | Positioning Response |
|---|---|---|
| Flanking Assassins | Nakroth, Murad, Aoi | Stay out of enemy vision until their mobility tools and burst skills hit your allies. |
| Long-Range Mages | Liliana, Iggy, Raz | Stand diagonal to minion waves and choke points to avoid incidental poke damage. |
| Dive Bruisers | Allain, Lu Bu, Florentino | Kite backward across open ground while maintaining maximum attack range. |
| Hard CC Tanks | Thane, Baldum, Mina | Stay at max basic attack distance; remain outside Flash-initiation range. |
Entering an engagement a few seconds late with full health provides far greater teamfight value than dying in the opening seconds to an unspent enemy combo.
Rotate Through Secured Jungle Paths
When moving between the Abyssal Dragon Lane and Mid Lane, path through friendly, controlled jungle corridors rather than the river. River bushes are common ambush spots for roaming supports and mid laners, and face-checking them eliminates your range advantage.
- Check bushes with skill shots: If forced to rotate without an escorting tank, fire long-range abilities into brush to check for visual or audio hit confirmations.
- Take the long route: If your hero lacks scouting abilities, rotate behind your defensive towers. Giving up a few seconds of rotation speed prevents handing over shutdown gold and exposing your lane towers.
Kite Diagonally During Frontline Collapses
When diving bruisers breach your frontline, kite diagonally backward toward open ground or allied towers rather than retreating in a straight line down narrow choke points. Diagonal movement forces divers to travel farther, keeping them in range of tower fire and allied peel.
Stutter-step by moving the moment your basic attack projectile launches to maintain your maximum attack tether. Save defensive battle spells like Flicker and Purify, as well as survival equipment like Blade of Eternity or Death Sickle, exclusively for escaping lethal focus. Do not use Flicker offensively to secure low-health kills unless the enemy team is completely wiped out and cannot counter-attack.
Position Outside Neutral Objective Pits
When taking the Abyssal Dragon or Dark Slayer, stand completely outside the pit boundary facing your safest retreat route. Entering the pit restricts your movement, exposes you to objective knock-ups, and leaves you vulnerable to being cornered by an enemy collapse.
If the enemy team arrives to contest the objective, immediately shift your basic attacks from the monster to approaching champions, unless your jungler is in guaranteed Punish range. Maintaining safe zone control prevents a wipeout and ensures your team can convert an objective secure into a clean map push.

Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
This saved me time in the early game.
This guide answered the exact question I had.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
