To play Volkath effectively in the Arena of Valor jungle, rush level 4 through an uninterrupted first clear, gank vulnerable backline targets using Skill 2 into Skill 1 to secure stuns, and leverage the invulnerability window on your ultimate ability (Ultima) to dive towers and survive counter-attacks.
Initial Jungle Pathing and Level 4 Route
Volkath relies heavily on his ultimate to execute reliable tower dives and survive skirmishes. Begin your route on the side of the map opposite the Abyssal Dragon lane so your clear finishes near your duo lane.
- Sage Golem (Blue Buff): Start here to secure mana sustain and cooldown reduction, allowing frequent ability rotations across early camps.
- Secondary Camps: Clear the adjacent minor creep camp and monster camp using Skill 2 to close distance and Skill 1 to activate your passive shield and preserve health.
- Might Golem (Red Buff): Secure the red buff to gain on-hit slowing and bonus damage.
- Abyssal Dragon Lane Gank: Enter the dragon lane at level 4 with Punish available to contest the objective or dive overextended targets.
If invaded before level 4, concede non-critical outer camps. Volkath lacks baseline escape mobility prior to unlocking Ultima, making early duels against aggressive counter-junglers high risk.
Core Item Build
Volkath scales as an aggressive burst bruiser. The core build emphasizes physical penetration, cooldown reduction, and raw attack damage to maximize his missing-health execution damage.
| Item Slot | Recommended Item | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Jungle Item | Soulreaver | Provides attack damage and cooldown reduction to speed up camp clears and burst output. |
| Boots | Gilded Greaves | Grants magic defense and 35% resistance to reduce crowd control duration. |
| Penetration | Spear of Longinus | Shreds enemy physical armor, grants 15% cooldown reduction, and adds baseline health. |
| Burst Proc | Omni Arms | Amplifies basic attacks following ability casts during mounted cleaves and post-dismount combos. |
| Execution | Fenrir's Tooth | Increases damage against low-health targets, amplifying the missing-health execute on Skill 2. |
| Defensive / Flex | Blade of Eternity | Grants a revive effect to reset positioning after deep backline dives. |
Situational Swaps
- Heavy Magic Damage: Replace Spear of Longinus or Blade of Eternity with Medallion of Troy to withstand high burst poke before casting your ultimate.
- High-Mobility Targets: Replace Spear of Longinus with Rankbreaker to gain flat armor pierce and out-of-combat movement speed for faster map rotations.
Ability Priority and Ganking Combos
Skill leveling order:
- Prioritize Skill 2.
- Level Skill 1 second.
- Level Ultima whenever available at levels 4, 8, and 12.
Skill 2 is Volkath's primary engagement tool. Landing the initial projectile marks the target and grants vision. Recasting dashes directly to that target, dealing bonus physical damage that scales with their missing health.
Standard Ganking Sequence
- Cast Skill 2 from range or brush to mark an overextended squishy carry.
- Recast Skill 2 to dash directly to the target.
- Cast Skill 1 immediately upon arrival to consume the mark, triggering a stun and generating your defensive passive shield.
- Weave basic attacks to reduce the target's health bar, using Punish to secure the kill if needed.
If your initial Skill 2 projectile misses, disengage and reset. Dashing into combat without the mark removes your ability to trigger the Skill 1 stun and leaves Volkath vulnerable without a passive shield.
Ultima Mechanics: Mounting, Dismounting, and Tower Dives
Ultima cleanses existing crowd control, mounts Volkath on his steed, and grants control immunity alongside bonus movement speed. While mounted, his basic attacks turn into circular cleaves that hit multiple enemies and build Doom Lord charges up to a maximum of three stacks.
- Stack Requirement: Land up to three basic attacks while mounted to acquire maximum Doom Lord charges. Reaching max charges is required to trigger his post-dismount invulnerable state.
- Dismount Knock-Up: Recasting Ultima causes Volkath to leap off his mount, dealing area-of-effect physical damage and knocking up nearby enemies.
- Immortality State: Following a fully stacked dismount, Volkath enters an empowered form where his health cannot fall below 1 point for several seconds. When this state expires, he restores a percentage of his maximum health.
- Tower Diving: Activate Ultima before entering tower range. The steed's durability and immunity allow you to absorb defensive tower shots while locking down backline carries for your team.
Avoid dismounting immediately after activation unless an enemy is about to escape your mount's movement range. Prolonging the ride forces opponents to scatter and burn defensive cooldowns.
Teamfight Positioning
In five-on-five engagements around major objectives like the Dark Slayer or Abyssal Dragon, do not frontline against opposing tanks. Position in river brushes or jungle corridors to flank the fight:
- Wait for the enemy frontline to commit their primary crowd control and initiation abilities.
- Activate Ultima from the fog of war and charge past the frontline directly toward the enemy marksman or mage.
- Cleave to build three stacks, recast Ultima to knock up the carry, and follow with Skill 2 and Skill 1 to execute them.
- Use the post-immortality health restore and movement speed buff to disengage back toward your team or eliminate remaining low-health targets.
