In Armada: Warships Legends, combat damage and ability charges depend directly on vertical column alignment and elemental matchups. Shells travel straight upward from the exact grid columns where a match is made, meaning attacks only damage enemy warships positioned directly above those columns.

To maximize damage, align matches under target hulls, exploit color counter-affinities, and deploy a five-ship fleet that covers every color to keep every tile on the board active.

Vertical Lane Matching and Special Tiles

Standard tile clears only hit enemy vessels occupying the matched columns. Shells cleared in empty lanes sail off the board into open water, dealing zero hull damage.

However, clearing tiles in empty lanes performs a tactical maneuver called ghost firing. Ghost firing grants full energy gauge gain to ships sharing the cleared tile color while dealing no contact damage, allowing you to charge active abilities safely without triggering enemy retaliations.

Combining more than three shells creates tactical munitions:

  • Four-Shell Match: Spawns a directional booster that detonates an entire row or column when matched, firing across multiple lanes at once.
  • Five-Shell Match (T- or L-Shape): Spawns an explosive depth charge that clears a 3x3 area, charging energy for every color caught in the blast.
  • Five-Shell Line Match: Spawns an elemental flare that detonates all tiles of that color across the entire board, rapidly filling the matching ship's energy gauge.

Exploiting Color Affinities

Every warship and shell belongs to one of five colors. Attacking an elemental weakness increases shell damage against reinforced hull armor, while attacking an element you are weak against drastically reduces damage output.

The system features a three-color core cycle and a two-color opposing pair:

  • Red (Fire) beats Green (Nature)
  • Green (Nature) beats Blue (Water)
  • Blue (Water) beats Red (Fire)
  • Yellow (Light) and Purple (Dark) deal increased damage to each other and interact neutrally with Red, Green, and Blue

Fleet Composition Rules

Your combat fleet holds five warships. The colors you include dictate how the puzzle board behaves:

  • Fielding a Rainbow Fleet: Placing one ship of each color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Purple) ensures that every match on the board deals standard damage and generates energy for your fleet.
  • Missing Colors: If your fleet lacks a specific color, matching that color's tiles deals only 1 point of damage and generates zero energy.
  • Casualties: If an active ship sinks during battle, its corresponding color immediately drops to 1 damage and stops generating energy for the rest of the encounter.
  • Color Stacking: Swapping in a second ship of an enemy boss's counter-element doubles the damage of those specific matches. However, relying on fewer colors increases board volatility when those tiles fail to appear. Keep at least three distinct colors in your fleet to avoid stalled boards.

Target Locking and Active Skill Timing

Clearing shells matching a warship's affinity fills its energy gauge. Once full, that ship's active skill is ready to deploy.

Manual play provides better efficiency than auto-battle:

  1. Set Focus: Tap an enemy warship before firing to focus all single-target skills on that priority target.
  2. Cycle Fast Skills: Fire Cruiser and Destroyer abilities promptly to clear support escorts and lower front-row defenses.
  3. Hold Heavy Salvos: Save slower Aircraft Carrier strikes and Battleship barrages for wave bosses or turns where multiple targets line up in the strike zone.
  4. Upgrade Fleet Evenly: Distribute upgrade blueprints, commander experience, and repair parts across all five active ships so no single loss disables a color on your board.
