To solve Level 389 in Block Out, immediately clear out the least obstructed column to establish an empty buffer tube, then consolidate exposed colors to unlock buried blocks without cluttering your remaining open space.
Step 1: Open Your First Buffer Tube
The opening board in Level 389 disperses matching blocks across multiple mixed columns, which severely restricts valid moves. Moving individual blocks between partially filled tubes without a plan quickly consumes your available space and leads to an early stall.
- Locate the shallowest column: Scan the board for the tube containing the fewest mismatched blocks sitting above either an empty base or an existing matching stack.
- Transfer matching tops: Move exposed blocks onto matching colors in other columns rather than sending them into empty slots.
- Clear the target column completely: Shift the remaining odd pieces into available receiving tubes until one tube is entirely vacant.
- Reserve the empty tube: Do not fill the cleared tube with random mixed pieces. Use it strictly as a temporary transit slot to peel blocking pieces off deeper stacks.
Step 2: Consolidate Colors and Reveal Buried Blocks
Once you have a working buffer tube, focus on uncovering locked pieces. Shuffling blocks back and forth without exposing new layers wastes moves and clogs column headroom.
Every transfer should either combine matching segments or reveal a block required by another column. When three or four matching pieces are gathered, transfer them directly into their dedicated column to permanently remove that color from the sorting rotation.
| Stage | Primary Board Action | Strategic Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Initial Clear | Empty the least obstructed column | Establishes a temporary routing buffer |
| Surface Merge | Combine exposed duplicate colors | Restores vertical capacity in crowded tubes |
| Excavation | Shift foreign top blocks into the buffer | Reveals buried blocks needed elsewhere |
| Lock-In | Fill a single container with one color | Permanently frees a tube for remaining colors |
Step 3: Manage Column Capacity to Prevent Deadlocks
The highest risk of failure occurs midway through the puzzle when several tubes are partially consolidated but the remaining colors are scattered across single-slot openings.
- Check vertical capacity before dropping blocks: If a receiving tube only has one open unit left, depositing a single piece there blocks you from moving a two-piece block of that color later.
- Prioritize grouped transfers: Move multi-block segments of the same color before shifting single blocks.
- Avoid temporary trash layers: Never place an unrelated block on top of two matching pieces unless you can relocate that foreign block on the very next turn.
Step 4: Complete the Final Tubes
Once you narrow the board down to three active colors, space opens up significantly. Complete the stage by isolating the dominant color in each remaining column. Shift loose foreign blocks into your temporary buffer, combine the matching base blocks into their host containers, and consolidate the final colors one by one to finish the level.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Block Out articles next.
Can you add more details about updates in a future update?
This saved me time in the early game.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
