To win consistently in Bloons TD Battles Defense Mode, invest aggressively into the direct eco upgrade buttons while spending the minimum cash required to survive natural bloon waves. Because players cannot send offensive bloon rushes to force quick knockouts, matches become endurance tests. The winner is determined by who scales income faster, survives natural difficulty spikes, and builds high-tier Sun Temples supported by alternating stall abilities.
Recommended Tower Loadouts
Defense Mode requires towers that offer low early investment, reliable camo-lead detection, and massive scaling against MOAB-class blimps. Loadouts featuring Ice Monkey, Ninja Monkey, and Super Monkey—optionally swapping Ninja or Ice for Monkey Village—provide the necessary tools.
| Tower | Key Role | Priority Upgrades |
|---|---|---|
| Super Monkey | Primary late-game damage | 3-x (Sun God), 4-x (Temple of the Monkey God) |
| Ice Monkey | Early wave control and full-screen slow | 2-3 (Arctic Wind), 2-4 (Absolute Zero) |
| Ninja Monkey | Passive camo detection and blimp deceleration | 4-2 (Bloonjitsu), x-4 (Bloon Saboteur) |
| Monkey Village | Range boosts, cost discounts, and universal camo | 0-2 (Radar Scanner), 2-4 (Call to Arms) |
Early Eco Discipline and Defense Management
In Defense Mode, bloon send panels are replaced by eco buttons that raise your periodic income without sending hazards to the opponent. Every unnecessary defense upgrade in the opening rounds directly slows your compound income growth.
- Deploy minimal early defense: Place a single base tower, such as a Ninja Monkey or an Ice Monkey upgraded with Enhanced Freeze, at a key intersection to handle red and blue bloons.
- Cycle eco buttons immediately: Reinvest starting funds into the lowest-cost eco buttons as soon as income ticks arrive.
- Upgrade only on threshold threats: Pause eco spending only for a single income cycle to purchase specific tier-one or tier-two upgrades when faster green, yellow, or pink bloons begin threatening leaks.
Maintain this routine until your income comfortably exceeds 1,000 eco entering the mid-game.
Surviving Natural Wave Spikes
Natural bloon rounds deliver automatic difficulty spikes that will defeat unadjusted defenses even without player intervention.
Camo and Lead Blooms (Rounds 10–12)
Prepare answers before Round 10. A Ninja Monkey using Flash Bomb, a cheap Bomb Tower paired with camo detection, or a Monkey Village upgraded to 0-2 Radar Scanner will strip or eliminate lead and camo threats across your defense perimeter.
Ceramics and Initial MOABs (Rounds 15–20)
Grouped natural ceramics arrive on Round 15. A 2-3 Arctic Wind Ice Monkey or a cluster of 4-2 Ninjas controls the density through freeze areas and multi-shuriken pierce. When natural MOABs and BFBs appear between Rounds 18 and 20, transition to high-pierce energy damage. A Super Monkey upgraded to 2-0 Plasma Blasts or 3-0 Sun God shreds blimp shells, allowing your Ice and Ninja towers to clean up the interior ceramics.
Late-Game Temple Setup and Ability Rotation
Once natural ZOMG waves arrive past Round 22, standard attacking towers fail to keep pace without Temple of the Monkey God upgrades and continuous crowd control.
Constructing the Temple
Place sacrificial towers inside the target Super Monkey's radius before purchasing the 4-x Temple upgrade:
- Bomb or Mortar Towers: Grant explosive missile barrages.
- Ice Monkeys: Add freezing blasts to slow advancing bloons.
- Wizards or secondary Super Monkeys: Add heavy laser and energy projectiles.
Ensure you space your Super Monkeys far enough apart so a newly upgraded Temple does not accidentally consume an adjacent Temple.
Chaining Slow Abilities
Temples require active crowd control to buy time against scaling ZOMGs. Place three to four 0-4 Ninja Monkeys alongside multiple 0-4 Ice Monkeys, then stagger their abilities:
- Trigger one Bloon Saboteur to cut incoming blimp speed by half.
- As the Saboteur effect fades, activate an Ice Monkey's Absolute Zero to freeze the screen.
- Rotate to the next Bloon Saboteur.
Maintaining this sequence keeps ZOMGs slowed near the map entrance while your Temples apply continuous damage, allowing you to outlast the opponent's defenses.

Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
This helped me understand early game much better.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Bloons TD Battles articles next.
