To optimize base attacks in Boom Beach: War Strategy Game, match your army deployment to your current Headquarters (HQ) level. As your HQ levels up, base layouts introduce heavier defenses like Cannons, Mortars, and Rocket Launchers, while your army unlocks stronger unit pairings and higher Gunboat Energy (GBE) reserves.

Identify your HQ bracket below to deploy the most reliable troop combination, then upgrade your Landing Craft to meet critical capacity thresholds.

HQ Level Troop Progression

HQ Level BracketRecommended CompositionTactical RolePrimary Defensive Threats
HQ 2–5Riflemen & HeaviesHigh-volume swarms to handle limited early landing capacity.Basic splash damage towers
HQ 6–10Heavies & Zookas ("Hooka")Heavies absorb Machine Gun/Flamethrower fire while Zookas deal high ranged damage.Splash damage hitting unsheltered Zookas
HQ 11–15Tanks & MedicsMedics provide sustained healing to keep slow armor alive for zero-loss raids.Cannons, Boom Cannons
HQ 16–19Smokey WarriorsFast, self-healing melee units rush the enemy HQ under Smoke Screen cover.Low GBE, Flamethrowers, Mines, Rocket Launchers
HQ 20+Scorchers & BombardiersScorchers draw frontline aggro while Bombardiers deliver long-range artillery support.High-burst defensive concentrations

How to Execute Each Composition

HQ 2–10: Early Offense

  • HQ 2–5: Deploy a mix of Riflemen and Heavies. At early HQ levels, Landing Craft capacity is limited, making high-count basic units the most effective way to overwhelm defense layouts.
  • HQ 6–10: Shift entirely to the Heavy-Zooka ("Hooka") combination. Place Heavies first to soak damage from Machine Guns and Flamethrowers. Keep Zookas positioned directly behind them. If Zookas walk ahead of the Heavies, splash damage defenses will destroy them instantly.

HQ 11–15: Sustained Armored Raids

Transition to Tanks paired with Medics to clear complex base layouts with minimal unit loss.

  1. Scout target bases: Identify all Cannons and Boom Cannons, which serve as direct hard counters to your armor.
  2. Spend GBE early: Use your Gunboat abilities to destroy Cannons and Boom Cannons before dropping units onto the beach.
  3. Deploy Tanks with Medics: Allow Medics to passively heal Tanks taking sustained fire from Mortars and Sniper Towers.

HQ 16–19: High-Skill HQ Rushes

Unlock Smokey Warriors for fast core rushes. Warriors self-heal with every melee strike on a building, but they require strict Gunboat Energy management.

  1. Target the enemy HQ directly by laying a line of Smoke Screens.
  2. Direct Warriors to the HQ using Flares while they remain concealed under smoke.
  3. Shock key defenses—such as Rocket Launchers or Flamethrowers—the moment the smoke clears to allow Warriors to destroy the core.
  4. Failure Point: If your GBE is too low to maintain continuous smoke cover or trigger Shocks, avoid this strategy until you upgrade your GBE stat statuettes or Gunboat level.

HQ 20+: Late-Game Firepower

Deploy Scorchers alongside Bombardiers for high durability and long-range damage. Scorchers automatically path toward the nearest defenses and absorb massive amounts of damage. Bombardiers follow at a safe distance, dismantling structures from far behind the frontline shield without requiring precise Smoke Screen timing.

Priority Progression and Scouting Rules

To maximize the efficiency of any army composition:

  • Prioritize Landing Craft Upgrades: Upgrading Landing Craft past key capacity limits—such as the jumps at Level 10 to 11 or Level 15 to 16—allows your boats to hold an extra unit per craft. This jump directly increases your overall damage and health pool.
  • Adjust to Target Base Defenses: Scout the enemy layout before committing troops. Avoid running Tanks against bases stacked with Cannons, and avoid using Warriors on bases packed with Flamethrowers or Minefields unless you have sufficient GBE to clear or shock those threats prior to deployment.
