To prevent bus bay gridlock in Bus Fever! Car Jam Escape, only tap a vehicle out of the parking grid if its color matches the passenger currently standing at the front of the queue, or if moving that vehicle frees a matching bus behind it while leaving an open bay for that bus to enter.
Gridlock occurs when all available pickup bays fill with buses that cannot load the passenger at the head of the line, immediately causing a run-ending stall.
How Queue Order and Bus Bays Interact
Boarding operates under strict first-in, first-out (FIFO) queue rules. Passengers board an active bus only when they reach the front of the line and see an open bus that matches their specific color. A blue passenger standing at the front stops everyone behind them from moving. If your loading bays contain only red or yellow buses, no boarding occurs.
Buses require a designated quota of matching passengers—typically three or four—to fill up and leave the station. When a bus reaches capacity, it drives off the screen and reopens a loading bay. Because levels limit you to between three and five pickup bays, dispatching mismatched vehicles without an immediate departure plan rapidly fills your remaining slots and locks the board.
Step-by-Step Dispatch Rules
Follow this decision order before tapping any vehicle in the parking lot:
- Identify the Front Passenger Color: Look at the first passenger waiting at the stop. You must clear this color before any passengers behind them can board.
- Locate Direct Matches: Check the lot for an unblocked bus matching that lead color. If one has an open path to the exit, tap it immediately to start boarding.
- Count the Unblocking Chain: If the required bus is blocked, trace the vehicles in front of it. Identify exactly how many moves are required to open its lane.
- Verify Bay Capacity: Check your empty pickup bays. You need enough open bays to park the blocking vehicles and still have room for the matching bus to arrive and load.
- Clear the Path: Move the blocking vehicle into a vacant bay, dispatch the matching bus behind it, and allow the front passenger group to board and clear the space.
Managing Buffer Bays and Capacity Limits
A buffer bay is an intentionally vacant loading slot kept open to maneuver blocking cars out of the grid. If you consume every bay with idling buses, your options drop to zero.
| Loading Bay State | Vacant Bays | Risk Level | Action Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open Buffer | 3 or more | Low | Safely unblock multi-vehicle chains to access buried colors. |
| Constrained | 1 to 2 | Moderate | Only dispatch an off-color blocker if the matching bus can immediately enter and clear. |
| Full Capacity | 0 | Critical | Do not move any vehicle unless a partially filled bus in a bay can finish loading and depart. |
Partially loaded buses remain trapped in their bays until their remaining seats are filled. If a bus takes two passengers from the front and the queue shifts to a different color, that vehicle holds its bay indefinitely. Check the remaining queue to ensure subsequent passengers of that color will arrive before committing your final empty bay to a blocking vehicle.
Clearing Blocked Lots Without Stalling
Dense levels frequently arrange vehicles in spiral or interlocking clusters where buses block one another's exits. Do not tap peripheral buses simply because they have an open path to the road. Sending an unblocked vehicle to the bays when its color does not appear near the front of the queue converts useful maneuver space into dead storage.
Trace your path backward from the passenger line: locate the lead passenger's color, find that bus in the pack, and dismantle only the exact perimeter vehicles holding that single bus in place. Preserve at least one empty pickup bay throughout the clearing process so passenger departures continuously cycle bays open.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Bus Fever! Car Jam Escape articles next.
This saved me time in the early game.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
