To achieve a one-credit clear (1CC) in Castlevania: The Arcade on factory settings, you must prioritize defensive projectile destruction and target management over raw damage output. Because taking hits quickly depletes your single life pool, surviving wave encounters and boss fights requires preemptive whip swings, center-screen cursor positioning, and punishing boss hitboxes only during confirmed windows of vulnerability.

Target Prioritization and Wave Control

Enemies approach in fixed wave patterns as the semi-automated camera pans across each stage section. Leaving minor ranged units alive creates overlapping attack patterns that force unnecessary damage.

  • Target Projectile Units First: Clear smaller, projectile-firing mobs immediately upon spawning. Their ranged attacks disrupt your targeting and chip away at health during larger engagements.
  • Clear Peripheral Trash: Sweep peripheral targets with broad whip motions before shifting focus to heavy targets or boss hitboxes.
  • Keep Cursor Centered: Rest your cursor near the center of the screen when transitioning between enemy groups to minimize reticle travel distance to opposite edges.
  • Pre-Aim Camera Transitions: Memorize static spawn locations along the screen edges as the camera moves forward so you can strike enemies the moment they manifest.

Defensive Whip Swings and Projectile Negation

The whip functions as both your primary attack and your main defensive tool. Many physical and magical projectiles fired by enemies can be destroyed in mid-air before they reach you.

When enemy density increases, switch to defensive negation by swinging preemptively in the path of incoming fire. Creating a defensive buffer in front of your view prevents projectile damage when dodging becomes impractical during late-stage sequences.

Boss Vulnerability and Attack Cycles

Boss fights operate on strict cycles of telegraphed attack phases followed by brief vulnerability windows. Attempting to force damage during an invulnerability phase risks taking unrecoverable damage.

Battle PhaseTarget BehaviorPlayer Priority
Telegraphed Attack PhaseBoss is invulnerable or winding up attacksDestroy incoming projectiles and prepare cursor placement
Vulnerability WindowBoss exposes weak point after attack animationCommit to rapid, accurate whip strikes on the vulnerable hitbox
Recovery / ResetBoss resumes attack posture or shifts positionDiscontinue attacks immediately and return cursor to defensive posture

If a boss begins a new attack animation, stop swinging offensively and reset your focus to projectile defense. Passing up an extra strike to preserve health is essential for completing a full 1CC run.
