In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, you trigger the Bad Ending by reaching the Throne Room at the top of the castle and defeating Richter Belmont without equipping the Holy Glasses. Defeating Richter directly causes an early narrative conclusion, rolling the credits and blocking access to the Inverted Castle.
If you accidentally trigger this ending, reload your last save file to collect the required relics and equipment before challenging the Throne Room again.
Triggers and Conditions for the Bad Ending
The Bad Ending serves as a narrative fail-state where Alucard defeats Richter without realizing he is being controlled by the dark priest Shaft.
- Location: The Throne Room at the peak of the primary castle.
- Primary Cause: Reducing Richter Belmont's health to zero during the boss fight.
- Gear Condition: Entering the fight without the Holy Glasses equipped in your accessory slot, or failing to equip them before defeating Richter.
- Consequence: The game concludes immediately after Richter falls. The credits roll, leaving your map completion capped and preventing entry to the second half of the game.
Triggering this ending carries no permanent penalty on your save file, as long as you do not overwrite your progress after reaching the credits. It allows completionists to log the ending before returning to complete the main storyline.
How to Avoid the Bad Ending and Access the True Path
| Ending Outcome | Preparation & Action in Throne Room | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Bad Ending | Fight and defeat Richter Belmont directly without Holy Glasses equipped. | Immediate credits roll; map progress stops at the first castle. |
| True Path | Equip Holy Glasses, ignore Richter, and destroy the green floating orb above him. | Frees Richter from Shaft's control and unlocks the Inverted Castle. |
To bypass the early ending and continue into the Inverted Castle, complete the following steps:
- Obtain the Gold and Silver Rings: Explore the castle to locate both rings.
- Unlock the Clock Room: Travel to the central clock area in the Marble Gallery with both rings equipped to open the floor door.
- Collect the Holy Glasses: Meet Maria Renard in the subterranean area beneath the clock room to receive the Holy Glasses.
- Equip the Glasses: Open your inventory menu before or during the fight against Richter and place the Holy Glasses in an accessory slot.
- Target the Orb: During the boss encounter in the Throne Room, focus your attacks entirely on the floating green orb controlling Richter. Destroying the orb breaks Shaft's spell, saves Richter, and opens the portal to the Inverted Castle.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Castlevania articles next.
Can you add more details about strategy in a future update?
