In Castlevania, Simon Belmont can whip in eight directions and hold the attack button to dangle and extend the whip defensively. Mastering directional attacks, whip dangling, grapple swings, and sub-weapon management lets you clear hazards, block incoming projectiles, and keep dangerous enemies at a safe distance.

8-Way Whipping and Defensive Spacing

Attacking diagonally is your primary tool for striking enemies before they reach your hitboxes. By whipping upward or downward at a diagonal angle, you can clear crawling ground foes and airborne targets without stepping directly into their path.

In tight corridors, diagonal whipping lets you strike enemies through low ceilings or under elevated platforms where a standard horizontal strike cannot reach. Because whip swings have a slight wind-up and recovery window, commit to your attacks early rather than mashing the attack button when fast-moving targets approach.

Using the Whip Dangle Screen

To create a temporary defensive shield, press and hold the attack button after swinging, then move the direction pad to dangle and rotate the whip around Simon.

  • Deflect Projectiles: Rotate the dangling whip to swat away incoming weak projectiles.
  • Clear Low-Tier Enemies: Use the extended whip perimeter to destroy weak, fast-moving enemies like bats without taking chip damage.
  • Reposition Safely: Hold the whip extended to keep encroaching enemies back while waiting for moving hazards to reset.

Whip Swing Grappling for Hazards

Certain areas feature overhead grapple anchors that allow you to swing across wide chasms, collapsing floors, and crushing traps.

  1. Jump toward the grapple point: Launch into the air toward the designated anchor ring.
  2. Latch on with the whip: Aim your whip directly at the anchor point to attach to it.
  3. Control your momentum: Hold the directional pad in the direction you want to travel to execute the swing.

Platforming hazards operate on fixed visual rhythms. Align your swing with moving environmental elements before committing to the jump. If you miss a platform placement slightly, quick directional adjustments while attached to an anchor point can help you alter your landing trajectory.

Sub-Weapon Selection and Resource Management

Your directional whip covers most close- and mid-range angles without using resources. Save your Hearts for sub-weapons that hit high platforms or long horizontal corridors that your whip cannot easily reach.

Avoid depleting your Heart pool on basic enemies. Break candles, torches, and lanterns in safe, low-risk sections of a stage to rebuild your Heart supply before entering major stage transitions or boss encounters.

Stage Movement and Positioning Priority

You do not need to defeat every enemy in every room. Castlevania rewards players who prioritize positioning over total clears. When vertical sections feature heavy enemy placement, use grapple swings and directional attacks to bypass hazards quickly rather than engaging in drawn-out fights that increase your risk of taking damage.
