Hold your position and let an approaching enemy enter whip range before striking. In Castlevania on NES, rushing forward while an enemy is mid-jump can leave Simon vulnerable to a hit and knockback.
Watch the enemy before moving
When a Medusa Head or Flea Man appears, pause and observe its movement instead of advancing immediately. Strike when it comes within range, and avoid stepping forward while it is airborne. If a hit knocks Simon back, he may be pushed toward a pit or another hazard.
Use the whip against incoming threats
On a narrow platform or while enemies approach, stop, face the threat, and whip rather than trying to move through incoming attacks. The draft also suggests using the whip to intercept projectiles; if one is approaching, face it and strike before resuming your movement.
For a jump across a gap, deal with visible threats before committing. Don't enter a new screen without accounting for enemies that may be waiting there.

This saved me time in the early game.
Good guide for Castlevania players. The strategy part was useful.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
