To complete stages and defeat bosses in this Famicom release of Castlevania, you must lock in jump trajectories before leaping, save sub-weapon hearts for out-of-reach hazards, and wait for boss attack animations to end before striking.
Movement and Jump Execution
Movement in this entry is rigid, requiring precise alignment before taking any action.
- Commit to jumps early: Mid-air direction adjustments are not supported. You must align your character and decide your target landing spot before pressing the jump button.
- Account for heavy recoil: Taking damage causes significant knockback. Avoid fighting near ledge edges or open pits to prevent instant death from stray hits.
- Clear gaps before leaping: Screen layouts often place hazards near pit edges. Use sub-weapons to eliminate flying or standing foes before attempting jump transitions.
Sub-Weapon Usage and Heart Economy
Sub-weapons provide essential range when your primary attack cannot reach high or distant targets. Because hearts are limited, save them for high-risk obstacles rather than standard corridor enemies.
| Weapon | Range Profile | Primary Target | Heart Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whip | Short horizontal | Grounded foes in direct reach | None |
| Axe | High overhead arc | Enemies on elevated platforms | Consumes hearts |
| Boomerang | Horizontal return arc | Flying foes hovering outside whip range | Consumes hearts |
Save your heart supply strictly for:
- Flying enemies hovering above your standing attack arc.
- Enemies perched on platforms you cannot jump toward safely.
- Boss encounters that require ranged attacks to avoid melee hazards.
Boss Attack Patterns and Timing
Bosses follow static movement loops rather than adaptive artificial intelligence. Surviving these fights relies on observing telegraphs rather than fast reaction speed.
- Observe initial loops: Stand on the opposite side of the screen and watch the boss repeat three to four attack cycles without attacking.
- Identify telegraph triggers: Note the specific animation frame that signals an incoming projectile or dash attack.
- Counter after completion: Wait until the boss finishes an attack animation completely before moving into range to strike.
- Retreat immediately: Deliver your hits, then reset your position back to the safe side of the arena.
Late-Game Stage Progression
Health pickups rarely drop from defeated foes in later levels. To reach the end of the game with your remaining lives intact, reduce unnecessary combat exposure.
Do not attempt to clear every room. Focus exclusively on the jump path leading to the next screen transition. When entering crowded chambers, use a sub-weapon only on the single enemy blocking your platforming arc, then move forward immediately.

This saved me time in the early game.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Castlevania articles next.
Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
