Castlevania: Safer Whip Spacing and Platform Combat

In original Castlevania, attack from the farthest distance where your whip can still hit, and retreat if an enemy traps you near a hazard. The draft identifies close-range contact and knockback near pits or spikes as key risks, so prioritize safe positioning over pressing an attack.

Use whip range to manage enemies

The whip attacks forward at a fixed range. Stand outside an enemy’s immediate reach and strike as it enters whip range rather than moving directly into it. Against moving enemies such as bats or skeletons, watch their approach and time your attack for when they reach you.

If you misjudge the distance and get cornered, retreat toward a safe platform instead of forcing another hit. A damaging hit can knock you back, which is especially dangerous near bottomless pits or spikes.

Treat platforms as part of the fight

Before jumping onto a small or hazardous platform, check for nearby threats. If an enemy is already there, avoid jumping into its path. Clear the area first when you can; if you cannot attack safely, move back and wait for a better opening.

When a jump is unavoidable, plan your landing before you go. The draft cautions that attacking in midair can leave you exposed, so use a grounded attack when the enemy’s position allows it.

Use sub-weapons selectively

The draft names the Axe and Boomerang, also called the Cross, as possible ranged options. It describes the Axe as useful against flying enemies or foes on higher platforms, and the Boomerang or Cross as an attack that travels across the screen and returns. These options may help you attack without moving close, but the material does not establish which is better in every stage.

Use your whip when it can safely reach the target. Save sub-weapons for enemies or positions that are difficult to handle with the whip, and avoid spending Hearts on routine attacks when a whip strike will do.
