To clear Stage 1 of Castlevania with minimal damage, maintain spacing at the tip of your whip's range and walk forward gradually to prevent multiple enemy spawns at once. Because jump trajectories and attack animations lock your movement, success depends on managing your positioning before committing to an action.

Managing Whip Delay and Fixed Jumps

Every whip attack creates a commitment delay where your character cannot jump or change position. Striking an enemy when it is right next to you will cause contact damage before the attack animation finishes.

To attack safely:

  • Maintain maximum whip reach: Space yourself so enemies connect with the tip of your whip flame.
  • Plan jump landings beforehand: Once you leap, your trajectory is entirely fixed. Calculate your landing spot before leaving the ground.
  • Avoid bad trades: If an attack is mistimed, jump over the threat or step back rather than attempting to force a hit while close.

Transitioning on staircases also leaves you vulnerable for a split second. If an enemy approaches while you move along a staircase, step downward or to the side to clear your attack line before finishing the climb.

Managing Enemy Spawns and Movement

Enemies spawn based on your horizontal movement across the screen. Running forward quickly triggers multiple spawns at once, creating dangerous crowds.

  • Zombies: Walk forward at a measured pace. This forces ground spawns to appear individually rather than in clusters.
  • Bats: Bats follow predictable sine-wave movement arcs. Instead of chasing them across the screen, stand still and wait for them to fly directly into your vertical whip range.
  • Grounded Threats: Take elevated platform paths whenever available. Staying on upper ledges allows you to bypass many ground-level hazards completely.

Using and Conserving Sub-Weapons

Destroying candles drops secondary items such as the Axe, Stopwatch, or Boomerang. Picking up a new sub-weapon automatically replaces your active one, so hit candles selectively to avoid losing a preferred weapon.

Sub-weapon usage consumes Hearts as ammunition:

  • Axe: Throws in an arc to strike enemies on high platforms above your whip's standard horizontal line.
  • Heart Management: Save Hearts for dangerous multi-enemy groups or the Stage 1 boss rather than spending them on single targets that your standard whip can eliminate.
