To win with the Splashyard control deck in Clash Royale, never deploy Graveyard as an opening play or as an unsupported push during single elixir. Because Graveyard costs 5 elixir and provides zero defensive value, you must first neutralize the opponent's incoming push on your side of the arena, then cast Graveyard only after a surviving troop crosses the bridge to absorb Crown Tower fire.
Core Defensive Roles and Counter-Push Synergy
Splashyard relies on slow, splash damage, and ground distractions to dismantle pushes for positive elixir trades. Once an enemy push is eliminated, surviving defenders become immediate counter-push tanks for your offensive spells.
| Card | Primary Defensive Role | Counter-Push Role |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Wizard | Slows enemy movement and attack speeds from deep placement | Provides trailing ranged support behind the bridge |
| Baby Dragon | Clears aerial swarms and grouped ground units | Acts as an air tank to absorb Crown Tower shots |
| Knight | Distracts and absorbs hits from high-damage single targets | Serves as the primary ground tank for Graveyard Skeletons |
| Tombstone | Lures building-targeters and spawns continuous bait | Generates continuous chip pressure down the lane |
| Barbarian Barrel | Eliminates backline ranged troops like Princess or Dart Goblin | Spawns a front-line Barbarian to tank tower fire |
Use Tornado alongside these units to pull grouped attackers into the splash damage radius of your Baby Dragon or to drag bridge runners (such as Hog Rider, Miner, or Goblin Barrel) onto your King's Tower to trigger its third cannon early in the match.
Graveyard Placement Rules
A Crown Tower eliminates single Skeletons in one shot if it does not have a primary target. Deploy your Graveyard only when the Princess Tower locks onto a counter-pushing Knight, Baby Dragon, or Barbarian.
When casting the spell, follow strict tile placement:
- Default Placement: Place the Graveyard reticle one tile away from the King's Tower toward the outer boundary of the arena. Centering the spell over the Princess Tower causes Skeletons to spawn within range of the King's Tower, risking an early activation that ruins future attacks.
- Anti-Swarm Shift: If the defender places swarms on the inner corner between their towers, nudge your Graveyard one tile further toward the outer arena wall to isolate incoming defensive troops.
Spell Support and Counterplay
Pair Graveyard with Poison during double elixir or when you hold a substantial elixir advantage. Poison covers the full circumference of the Graveyard, neutralizing defensive swarms like Bats, Skeleton Army, and Goblins within two damage ticks while chipping the tower.
When the opponent uses defensive ranged units such as Archers, Musketeer, or Mother Witch behind their tower:
- Cast Poison over both the Princess Tower and the defending unit.
- Use Tornado to pull those defenders out from behind the tower and into the center of the Poison zone and the Baby Dragon's splash radius.
Matchup Game Plans
Versus Fast Cycle Decks
Against fast cycle decks running Hog Rider or Royal Hogs, match their tempo with defensive Tombstones and Ice Wizard. Do not spend Poison on offense during single elixir, as cycle opponents can quickly punish your empty elixir bar. Wait until double elixir to commit Poison offensively, forcing them to spend cards into your continuous area damage.
Versus Heavy Beatdown Decks
When facing Golem, Lava Hound, or Electro Giant decks, do not push into the lane of their building tank until your defense is stabilized. If the opponent places a heavy tank behind their King's Tower during single elixir, apply moderate pressure in the opposite lane with a Knight or Barbarian Barrel paired with Graveyard. This forces them to spend elixir defending their off-lane tower rather than stacking high-damage support troops behind their tank. Defend the remaining tank on your side by using Tornado to separate support troops from the front line into your splash defenders.
Late-Game Strategy
During double and triple elixir, transition into continuous pressure. If an opponent plays an impenetrable defensive wall of buildings and splash troops, rely on defensive stops and transition to spell chip. Repeatedly play defensive Ice Wizard and Tombstone, cycle Poison over their Princess Tower whenever they place troops near it, and maintain board control until the match ends.

I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
The tips are practical and easy to follow.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Clash Royale articles next.
This helped me understand strategy much better.
