To complete Chapter 2, "Made of Odds and Ends," in Crushed In Time, gather the scattered mechanical scrap, decode the wall and safe locks to acquire the remaining parts, assemble the drive mechanism in your inventory, and trigger the central machine controls in the correct order to open the exit door.
Workshop Item Locations
Before attempting to assemble the room's machinery, search the workshop to collect five essential starting items:
- Small Screwdriver Head & Intact Gear Wheel: Located on the main workbench to the right, sitting next to an open tool caddy.
- Torn Blueprint Scrap: Wedged into the crack of the drawer on the main workbench.
- Loose Metal Rod: Buried under discarded wooden planks in the scrap pile at the bottom left corner. Click the planks aside to pick it up.
- Wrench Handle: Sitting on an overturned wooden crate beside the shelving unit.
How to Unlock the Wall Cabinet and Floor Safe
Two locked storage units hold the rest of the components required to repair the central contraption.
Wall Cabinet
- Inspect the framed illustration hanging on the wall above the workbench.
- Shift the picture frame to reveal a four-symbol numerical clue carved into the plaster.
- Turn the four dials on the face of the wooden cabinet to match the wall markings from left to right.
- Open the cabinet to retrieve a Spindle Nut, a Lubricating Oil Can, and the Second Blueprint Scrap.
Floor Safe
- Examine the locked floor safe located beneath the central drafting table. The lock features three concentric rings showing workshop icons.
- Match the rings to the hierarchy shown on your combined blueprint scraps:
- Outer Ring: Hammer
- Middle Ring: Gear
- Inner Ring: Caliper
- Turn the latch clockwise to unlock the safe door.
- Take the Control Valve Handle from inside.
Assembling and Installing the Mechanism
Raw components cannot be attached individually to the central machine casing. Combine them in your inventory first:
- Craft the Crank Arm: Combine the loose metal rod with the wrench handle.
- Oil the Gear Core: Apply the lubricating oil can to the rusted spindle nut, then combine it with the intact gear wheel.
- Assemble the Drive Lever: Combine the lubricated gear assembly with the assembled crank arm.
Return to the central machine chassis and complete the installation:
- Use the lubricating oil can on the exposed central axle shaft to clear the dried grime.
- Insert the assembled drive lever mechanism directly into the central housing.
- Place the control valve handle onto the high-pressure release pipe on the upper left side of the machine, turning it clockwise until it clicks into place.
Final Machine Activation Sequence
Operating the contraption out of order resets the steam pressure, requiring you to start the sequence over. Interact with the console components in this exact order:
| Step | Mechanism | Action | Success Signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | High-Pressure Valve | Turn clockwise three full rotations | Steam hissing stops; gauge needle enters the green zone |
| 2 | Lower Gear Clutch | Shift the drive lever down | Gear teeth mesh with the internal drive chain |
| 3 | Electrical Toggle | Flip the dual brass toggle switches from left to right | Indicator lights change from red to solid amber |
| 4 | Main Hand Crank | Rotate the extended crank clockwise continuously | Flywheels spin up to power the door latch |
Once the flywheel reaches full speed, the hydraulic lock on the reinforced exit door disengages. Walk through the open doorway to complete Chapter 2 and begin Chapter 3.

Nice guide. I am checking the other Crushed In Time articles next.
This saved me time in the early game.
The explanation is clear, especially for beginners.
