To turn an underestimated character into an endgame damage dealer in Dawn's Edge, keep your base attributes suppressed early, complete the Sword God mentorship event in the mountain regions, and clear the faction return quest line to permanently unlock S-tier stat scaling.

Identifying Latent Growth Characters

Units labeled as "dull" or low-stat at the start of the game often hold higher growth potential than early-peaking characters. Check a character's profile for specific growth modifiers before deciding whether to bench them.

  • Growth Tags: Look for characters tagged with Delayed or Latent growth modifiers. These units gain power exponentially rather than linearly.
  • Low Threat Scaling: Starting with low base attributes tricks the game's dynamic difficulty system into spawning lower-threat encounters. Use these low-threat zones to safely gather resources without triggering aggressive enemy scaling.
  • Resource Management: Avoid over-investing in starting skills for Latent characters. Early abilities are fully replaced upon completing their late-game transformation.

Triggering the Sword God Mentorship

Unlocking a Latent character's true path requires triggering the Sword God’s Lesson narrative event located at hidden shrines in remote mountain regions. Because the Mastery Awakening event scales its bonus based on your power level at the time of completion, careful preparation is required.

  1. Suppress Base Attributes: Keep core stat investment low until you reach the master to maximize the awakening bonus.
  2. Select Retained Skill Modifiers: Unlock only skill slots that boost attack speed or critical damage multipliers, as these specific stats transfer over after transformation.
  3. Farm Ancient Blade Manuals: Collect these scrolls prior to starting mentorship so you can unlock the Transcendent Edge passive immediately upon finishing the event.

Because you are intentionally delaying attribute growth, early combat requires heavy reliance on terrain manipulation and tactical positioning to offset low defensive stats. Complete the mentorship before progressing too far into mid-game regional exploration, or you risk missing the event trigger window.

Managing Faction Return and Endgame Optimization

After finishing your training in seclusion, navigate the character back home to trigger the Return to the Clan event. This permanently resets the unit's base stats to S-tier scaling, changes their visual model, and turns them into a primary damage dealer.

Return to the faction creates immediate challenges and specific build requirements:

  • Faction Duels: Returning triggers hostility from rival NPCs and fluctuations in faction reputation. Be prepared to defend the character in single-target duels immediately following the transformation.
  • Gear Transition: Equip high-level weapon and armor sets set aside during the training phase. Evolved base stats now support equipment that was previously inaccessible.
  • Artifact Priorities: Equip artifacts that boost Sword Intent and Physical Prowess. These modifiers provide the highest damage scaling for the unique move-sets unlocked during seclusion.
