To clear stages consistently in Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, choose a dwarf class that fits your combat style, match mid-run stat upgrades to your starting weapon's damage type, and prioritize survivability stats in permanent meta-progression.
Dwarf Class Combat Roles
Each dwarf class provides unique tactical strengths, mobility traits, and defensive options that dictate how you handle swarms and navigate the caves.
| Dwarf Class | Combat Role | Primary Strengths | Tactical Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scout | Mobility & Precision | Single-target DPS, rapid repositioning | Kiting high-priority targets and escaping tight groups |
| Engineer | Area Defense | Automated turrets, perimeter control | Establishing defensive kill zones during heavy swarms |
| Gunner | Crowd Control | Sustained fire, shield utility | Halting swarm pushes and breaking through enemy lines |
| Driller | Terrain Manipulation | Rapid mining, chokepoint creation | Carving escape routes and reshaping cave layouts |
Mid-Run Upgrade Strategy
Maximize your damage-per-second (DPS) and survival during a run by aligning your gear choices with your class's initial loadout:
- Match Damage Types: When level-up stat choices appear, select modifiers that boost your starting weapon's specific damage type—such as kinetic, elemental fire, or explosive damage.
- Integrate Mining into Movement: Mine through rock walls during low-intensity waves to clear sightlines, gather gold and minerals, and create escape paths before swarms multiply.
- Pivot During Extraction: Shift your focus from gathering resources to maintaining open movement paths once swarm indicators signal heavy enemy activity or the extraction pod arrives. Use defensive utility, such as the Gunner's shield or Scout's high speed, to push past crowded bottlenecks.
Permanent Meta-Progression Priority
Between missions, spend your harvested gold and minerals on permanent stat upgrades in the main menu. These upgrades apply universally to all classes.
- Phase 1 (Defensive Foundation): Invest initially in Health, Armor, and Movement Speed. A higher survival threshold prevents early-game wipes and gives you room to learn enemy attack patterns.
- Phase 2 (Offensive Scaling): Once you can regularly reach later biomes, transition your resource spending into Damage Output and Critical Hit Modifiers to defeat elite enemies and late-stage swarms quickly.

This helped me understand base building much better.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about base building in a future update?
Nice guide. I am checking the other Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor articles next.
