To craft Legendary Gems efficiently in Diablo Immortal without wasting runes, use ATI runes for guaranteed, bound 1-star and 2-star gems to equip directly or supply upgrade food, and reserve FA runes for tradeable gems that you can sell on the Market for Platinum. Never consume high-value utility gems or tradeable 5-star drops as raw upgrade material when their Market value can fund significantly more progression.
Gem Power Values and Upgrade Mechanics
The Apprentice Jeweler in Westmarch crafts Legendary Gems and processes gem upgrades using Gem Power (GP). When consumed as upgrade food, every Legendary Gem tier provides a baseline value:
- 1-Star Gem: 1 Gem Power
- 2-Star Gem: 4 Gem Power
- 5-Star Gem: 32 Gem Power (at Rank 1, regardless of initial star quality rolled)
When you feed an upgraded gem into another gem, the system returns the full cumulative Gem Power previously invested into that gem. However, rank progression milestones at Rank 5 and above also require duplicate copies of the target gem at Rank 1. Raw Gem Power cannot substitute for required duplicate copies.
Bound vs. Unbound Crafting Routes
The Apprentice Jeweler provides distinct recipes depending on whether you need immediate account progression or Market currency.
| Crafting Recipe | Currency Required | Output Status | Primary Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Targeted 1-Star or 2-Star | ATI and Minor Runes | Bound | Equipping directly, leveling Gem Power, or Rank 5+ duplicates |
| Random 1-Star or 2-Star | FA Runes | Unbound (Tradeable) | Listing on the Market for steady Platinum income |
| Random All-Tier (1-Star to 5-Star) | Maximum FA Runes | Unbound (Tradeable) | Rolling for high-value drops to use or sell |
| Telluric Pearl Crafting | 40 Telluric Pearls | Bound | Crafting a specific 2/5-star gem for your build |
When to Use ATI Runes
ATI runes, earned alongside minor runes from Elder Rifts and merchant exchanges, craft account-bound gems. Use these recipes when you need a specific 1-star or 2-star gem to socket immediately, when you need exact duplicates to satisfy higher-rank upgrade gates, or when your equipped gems need predictable Gem Power.
When to Use FA Runes
FA runes are purchased from the Fading Ember merchant and produce unbound gems marked with a scale icon. These gems can be sold on the Market for Platinum. Because Platinum is required to buy secondary gems (such as Tourmalines and Sapphires), specific 5-star gems, and missing duplicates, using FA runes to craft bound gems or raw upgrade food directly wastes long-term purchasing power.
Managing 5-Star Drops and High-Value Gems
The all-tier FA rune recipe gives a small chance to craft an unbound 5-star Legendary Gem (starting at 2/5 quality). How you handle this roll determines your account efficiency:
- Evaluate your build commitment: Only equip a 5-star gem if you have the resources to rank it past Rank 4. Leaving multiple 5-star gems at Rank 2 provides less Combat Rating and resonance than fully developed Rank 10 1-star gems.
- Sell unneeded rolls on the Market: A tradeable 2/5-star gem typically sells for 30,000 to 64,000 Platinum. Crushing an unneeded 5-star gem yields only 32 Gem Power, whereas the Platinum from a Market sale can purchase far more Gem Power through cheap 1-star and 2-star listings.
- Protect critical 1-star and 2-star utility gems: Never feed utility gems with strong percentage-based multipliers into other gems for quick Gem Power. Keep the following gems for active PvE and Challenge Rift builds:
- Berserker's Eye: High-efficiency PvE damage multiplier.
- Everlasting Torment: Critical strike scaling and continuous damage application.
- Mother's Lament: Broad critical hit chance scaling.
- Pain Clasp: Increased damage against enemies taking continuous damage.
Crafting Progression Strategy
Prioritize your crafting currency to hit key utility milestones rather than distributing Gem Power evenly across all equipped slots:
- Target Rank 5 on core 1-star gems: Focus initial ATI rune crafting on your primary socketed 1-star gems until they reach Rank 5. Reaching Rank 5 unlocks a 10% Magic Find bonus per gem, increasing legendary gear drop rates during daily farming.
- Stockpile matching duplicates early: Before using crafted gems as upgrade fodder, retain the necessary Rank 1 duplicate copies of your equipped gems so your upgrades do not stall at Rank 4.
- Convert FA runes to Market capital: Once your core sockets reach Rank 5, direct all FA runes into tradeable crafts to build a Platinum reserve. Use that Platinum to purchase cheap duplicates from the Market while relying on ATI runes for baseline Gem Power.
