To beat the Dense Iron challenge mode in Dome Keeper, spend your earliest iron directly on drill upgrades rather than dome weapons, and avoid breaking dense ore veins until your drill power matches their durability. Because iron deposits require significantly more hits to break while the surrounding dirt retains normal hardness, attacking veins with a base drill wastes mining time, delays deliveries, and leaves your dome exposed during alien waves.

Early-Game Upgrade Sequence

Early alien waves feature basic ground walkers and light spitters that can be defeated using unupgraded dome weaponry. Because falling behind on tool speed creates severe resource starvation, invest every piece of initial iron into mining and transport capabilities.

Upgrade PhasePrimary TargetMechanical Purpose
Cycle 1Drill Tier 1Cuts iron extraction hits, preventing early schedule collapses.
Cycle 2Carry Capacity 1Moves initial batches without halting movement speeds back to the dome.
Cycle 3Base Weaponry / ShieldAdds baseline damage or speed to handle growing flying and walking swarms.
Cycles 4–5Drill Tier 2Penetrates deeper strata and cracks exposed dense iron clusters efficiently.

Subterranean Layout and Excavation Tactics

Standard digging methods will stall your economy in Dense Iron. Treat iron clusters as obstacles rather than immediate payouts during your opening runs.

  • Bypass dense veins: When an exploratory tunnel exposes an iron node, dig around it through the soft dirt. Continue downward to reveal extra paths, water pools, and cobalt.
  • Keep a straight vertical artery: Dig a direct vertical shaft directly underneath the dome. Avoid lateral detours along the main artery so returning trips carry no navigation penalties.
  • Batch excavation: Leave exposed iron veins untouched until purchasing Drill Tier 2. Once the upgrade is active, mine the entire cluster in a single, focused cycle.

Logistics and Gadget Priorities

Dense ore slows your movement significantly when carried manually. If an attack alarm sounds while you are deep underground with a heavy load, you will not reach the dome in time to prevent hull damage.

Select gadgets that solve transport bottlenecks instead of passive defenses:

  1. Teleporter: The strongest logistic option for this modifier. Placing a teleport pad directly beside deep iron deposits allows you to mine until the final seconds before a wave.
  2. Lift (Elevator): Elevator orbs haul dense iron automatically, allowing you to drop chunks in the main shaft and keep digging.
  3. Blast Mining: Relic cellars offering explosive mining allow you to bypass node hit points completely, destroying dense clusters in a single detonation.

If logistics gadgets do not appear, use staged drop-offs. Ferry iron chunks to the base of the central vertical shaft, drop them, and complete a dedicated transport sprint only when returning to defend the dome.

Wave Timing and Retreat Thresholds

Always check your dome wave radar before striking a dense iron block. If the hostile radar indicator passes the halfway mark toward your dome, immediately abandon any half-broken iron vein and begin your ascent. Spending cobalt to repair base hull damage is an unsustainable trade-off for an unfinished iron node. Once Drill Tier 2 and consistent transport are established, the economic penalty of the challenge diminishes, allowing you to fortify weapon systems for later waves.
