To survive in Dome Keeper, establish a vertical strip-mining shaft immediately, spend your first iron on movement speed and drill upgrades rather than secondary weaponry, and return to the dome terminal five to seven seconds before each attack timer runs out.
Early Mining and Shaft Layout
Start each run by digging a vertical central shaft straight down from the dome. Tunneling in a single central column minimizes travel time and provides a direct path back to the defense console.
- Main Spine: Dig straight down until you encounter harder rock layers or mineral clusters.
- Horizontal Branches: Carve two-tile-high side corridors spaced two untouched blocks apart. This pattern exposes the ceiling and floor blocks of adjacent rows without wasting time clearing empty stone.
- Hauling Rhythm: Do not drag isolated ore chunks to the surface one by one. Pile loose iron and water at the base of your central shaft, then haul them in full batches to minimize wasted vertical trips.
Upgrade Priority Order
Physical resource weight slows keeper ascent speed. Dragging heavy mineral chains without mobility upgrades leads to missed defensive cycles and dome damage. Spend your early iron on mobility, drill strength, and wave awareness before investing in secondary weapon options.
| Upgrade | Timing | Primary Function | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drill Tier 1 | Cycles 1–2 (Iron) | Clears soft rock in 1–2 hits | Critical |
| Keeper Speed 1 | Cycles 2–3 (Iron) | Lowers vertical transit time | Critical |
| Carry Capacity 1 | Cycles 3–4 (Iron) | Reduces weight drag per carried ore | High |
| Drill Tier 2 | Cycles 5–6 (Iron) | Digs through second-tier hard rock | High |
| Hostile Wave Meter | Cycles 3–5 (Iron/Water) | Displays exact wave arrival timing | Essential |
Upgrade your drill strength whenever subterranean rock shifts to a tougher tier. If rock density increases and you have not upgraded your drill, your excavation rate drops significantly, leaving you stranded underground when attack alarms sound.
Defensive Return Timing and Combat Targeting
Leave the mine and enter the dome console at least five to seven seconds before the wave timer hits zero. If you reach the surface at the last second, dome weapons remain unaligned while monsters start attacking the exterior shell. If you are hauling resources when the countdown nears its end, drop the payload at the top of the shaft and take immediate control of dome defenses.
Once combat begins, prioritize targets by threat profile:
- Airborne Spitters and Flyers: Eliminate fast aerial enemies first. They strike quickly from unpredictable angles and deal steady chip damage. Lead fast-moving targets when firing beam or projectile weapons rather than trailing behind them.
- Heavy Ground Monsters: Focus on slow melee bruisers second. While they deal heavy damage upon impact, their long approach and wind-up times give you leeway to clear flying threats first.
Gadget Selection and Cobalt Preservation
When opening underground relic chambers, evaluate your current operational bottleneck before picking a gadget:
- Logistics and Automation: Choose transport aids (such as lifts, teleporters, or helper drones) if hauling distances are delaying your defensive returns. Passive resource routing keeps iron moving to the surface while you excavate lower strata.
- Dome Defense: Choose shield generators or defensive capacitors if combat waves are consistently threatening hull integrity.
Save cobalt strictly for structural repairs and critical terminal upgrades. Cobalt is scarce and resides in deeper rock layers. Keep at least two cobalt units in reserve at all times to patch emergency hull breaches caused by late-game monster waves.

Can you add more details about early game in a future update?
I wish I had read this before upgrading the wrong thing.
Nice guide. I am checking the other Dome Keeper articles next.
This helped me understand early game much better.
