To prepare for deep exploration in Terraria, construct modular housing for incoming NPCs on the surface and excavate a straight, two-block-wide vertical shaft down to the Underworld. Expanding your base ensures you unlock key vendor services, while a vertical shaft—commonly called a Hellevator—drastically reduces travel time to subterranean biomes.
Building Modular NPC Housing
Attracting NPCs requires building valid rooms before those characters can spawn and offer specialized goods or services. Constructing a vertical grid of identical rooms on top of your starter shelter allows you to add housing quickly without cluttering the surface terrain.
Every valid NPC house must include the following components:
- Enclosed Frame: Solid blocks for floors, side walls, and a ceiling.
- Background Walls: Player-placed background walls filling the entire room interior.
- Light Source: At least one torch, lantern, or candle.
- Flat Surface: A workbench, table, or bookcase.
- Comfort Item: A chair, bed, or bench.
Keep your core crafting apparatuses—including the Workbench, Furnace, and Iron or Lead Anvil—centralized on the ground floor near your primary storage chests. This minimizes travel time when crafting upgraded gear or organizing gathered resources between trips underground.
Excavating a Safe Hellevator Shaft
A Hellevator is a straight shaft dug from surface level directly down to the Underworld. Digging the path properly prevents fall deaths and minimizes unwanted enemy encounters.
- Craft Pickaxe Upgrades: Secure at least an Iron Pickaxe or Silver Pickaxe before starting. Higher-tier pickaxes cut down digging time through dense stone strata.
- Clear a Two-Block Gap: Stand over your chosen location and dig straight down, clearing a gap exactly two blocks wide. This gives your character enough clearance to fall without catching on ledges.
- Place Ropes or Platforms: Hang rope down the center of the shaft or place wooden platforms at regular intervals so you can climb back up before obtaining flight or hook accessories.
- Keep Torches on the Hotbar: Place torches along the shaft walls as you fall to maintain visibility and spot ore veins embedded in adjacent rock.
- Manage Underground Liquids: Carry empty buckets to drain small water or lava pools. Build solid block dams across horizontal tunnels if you encounter larger lakes to avoid flooding your shaft.
To protect yourself during late-stage shaft trips, line the shaft walls with wood or stone bricks. Sealed walls prevent enemies from spawning inside the shaft while you descend.
Equipment and Underworld Preparation
As you reach deeper cavern levels, subterranean enemies like cave bats and skeletons hit significantly harder. Equipping the right accessory loadout ensures you stay alive during mining trips.
- Prioritize Stat Modifiers: Basic accessories like the Shackle provide baseline defense, but accessory modifiers dramatically change combat effectiveness. Aim for the Menacing modifier on your equipped accessories to gain a flat +4% bonus to damage output per item.
- Refine Gear via Goblin Tinkerer: Once unlocked, use the Goblin Tinkerer’s workstation to re-roll unwanted modifiers on your primary combat accessories.
- Mitigate Fall Damage: Falling long distances down a Hellevator will kill your character unless mitigated. Equip items such as the Lucky Horseshoe or a Cloud in a Bottle variant to cancel fall damage before dropping the entire length of the shaft.
Halt your downward progress when background visuals shift to the Underworld layer. Pause at the cavern threshold to upgrade your armor tier and weapons before stepping into the molten zone.
