To build an effective squadron in Epic Age, anchor your formation with a durable Chief commander, match your heroes to a single high-proficiency troop type, and tune your commanders' Speed attributes so support skills trigger before your primary damage dealer attacks. Because an entire squadron routs the moment its Chief runs out of troops, squadron composition must prioritize leader survival and execution order over simply assembling high-rarity heroes.
Protect the Chief Commander
Your squadron's survival depends entirely on the commander placed in the Chief slot. If your Chief's troop contingent falls to zero, your entire march routs immediately—even if your Deputy commanders took zero casualties.
- Avoid fragile Chiefs: Never assign a glass-cannon attacker to the Chief slot unless that hero possesses reliable self-healing, damage mitigation, evasion, or heavy crowd control. Enemy squads with targeted burst skills or counter-attacks will eliminate an unprotected Chief in the opening rounds.
- Capitalize on exclusive Chief skills: Certain commanders feature powerful command auras or skills that only activate when they serve as the Chief. If you place a hero in the lead slot specifically for their Chief skill, dedicate your Deputy slots to heroes with taunts, damage-sharing skills, and defensive passives to keep that leader alive.
Match Single-Type Troop Proficiencies
Every squadron marches under one unit designation: Infantry, Cavalry, Archers, or Pikemen. Each commander's combat effectiveness scales directly with their individual proficiency grade in that specific unit type.
Deploying commanders with low proficiency grades severely lowers their base attributes and troop scaling. Build your team around your primary carry's highest proficiency, then fill the remaining slots only with heroes who share an S-rank or A-rank rating in that troop category.
| Proficiency Tier | Attribute Scaling | Squadron Role Suitability |
|---|---|---|
| S-Rank | 120% Base Attributes | Primary choice for both Chief and main damage dealers. |
| A-Rank | 100% Base Attributes | Reliable baseline; ideal for utility, control, and support Deputies. |
| B-Rank | 85% Base Attributes | Sub-optimal; use only as temporary placeholders during early play. |
| C-Rank | 70% Base Attributes | Unusable; stat penalties compromise squadron survivability and output. |
Distribute Squad Roles Across Three Functions
Fielding three uncoordinated damage dealers causes squads to collapse during sustained engagements. A balanced three-hero march requires clear role division across three functions:
1. Primary Damage Dealer
Allocate your best percentage-scaling active or continuous attack skills to one dedicated attacker. Focus their attribute points heavily into their primary scaling stat (Might or Intelligence). Because this unit produces the majority of your eliminations, protect them against enemy silences and disarms with crowd-control immunity or cleansing skills.
2. Support and Damage Mitigation
Support Deputies preserve your army's troop counts through shields, damage reduction, attribute buffs, and healing. Equip support heroes with command or preparation skills that activate reliably on turn one, shielding your march against early enemy burst damage.
3. Crowd Control
Disabling enemy commanders interrupts their skill rotations and reduces incoming damage far more effectively than armor alone. Equip at least one commander with reliable crowd-control effects—such as stuns, silences, disarms, or confusion—to minimize losses when attacking player garrisons and high-level resource tiles.
Tune Speed Attributes for Skill Turn Order
In Epic Age, the Speed attribute determines turn initiative. You must manipulate your commanders' Speed values to ensure allied buffs and enemy debuffs land before your primary damage dealer attacks:
- Check base Speed: Open your squadron setup menu and inspect the baseline Speed stat of all three commanders.
- Set Support to act first: Allocate bonus attribute points, equipment, or auxiliary speed skills to your buffer or defense-shredding Deputy so their final Speed is slightly higher than your damage dealer's Speed.
- Set DPS to act second: Keep your primary damage dealer at the second-highest Speed value so they attack immediately while active enemy debuffs and allied damage buffs are active.
- Set Sustain or Tank to act third: Allow your defensive or healing commander to act last, refreshing shields and restoring casualties sustained during the round.
Manage Leadership Caps During Progression
Squadron size is governed by your Castle's Leadership capacity. High-rarity heroes require significant Leadership, which prevents you from deploying three top-tier commanders early in the game.
To progress efficiently:
- Start with a two-hero squad: Pair an S-rank Chief with one low-cost utility Deputy until your facilities expand.
- Upgrade military buildings: Prioritize Castle and military infrastructure upgrades to raise your Leadership cap and unlock the second Deputy position.
- Add a budget third commander: When unlocking the third slot, insert a low-cost support or control hero to stay within your current Leadership limit.
- Transition to high-cost specialists: Replace budget facilitators with high-cost legendary commanders only after your Leadership limit comfortably accommodates their requirements.

This guide answered the exact question I had.
I tried this today and it worked better than my old setup.
Can you add more details about heroes in a future update?
Nice guide. I am checking the other Epic Age articles next.
